I am on the a-ha mailing list and I will ask where they got their name...I do know that
a-ha was previously known as "Bridges" with Mags and Pal being in the band Morten wasn't a part then...Morten was actually an audience member to one of their performances...Mag and Pal later asked Morten to join and then they named theirselves a-ha...I will look into the why and how for you...

Here is what I pulled off the a-ha mailing list today: (Luckily someone else asked the question you asked and I didn't have to)

the first really existing band was named "Bridges" by
Magne and Paul. They
finished the band in 1982. After it the both eager
musicians try to get success
in London. But the first try was'nt successful. They asked
Morten harket,
they got to know him at an concert with an old band named
"soldier
blue". Under the condition that they have enough
demonstration matrial,
not only two or three songs.

The three went to the basement of Paul's home. But they
didn't had a name
for the band! Morten looked at Pauls notebook and find a
song called a-ha
inside. Simply, imprint and international!!
In this basement they also create the first world-hit
"Take on me".
It was named "Lesson One" before. With a few demonstration
meterial in the
luggage, Morten, Magne and Paul went to London.
They lived under bad conditions, audition under worst
conditions , until
they met Terry Slater, the Manager! In 1984 they publish
the first single
"Take on me" in first Version, but they sold only 300.

In April 1985 their song had been published again; with no
success
Through the originell comic-video the title got the Nr. 1
on 9th of Octo-
ber 1985 of the american Billboard-Charts and also in
other eleven countries
they become Nr. 1!!!

Here is another tidbit I know about a-ha...It took a-ha 3 attempts to record Take On Me before they made a hit with it, and there was also a Take On Me video before the one we are familiar with that never made it to the tele...
