Cool interview! Nice to read something like that in English as I'm a hopelessly mono-lingual like most Americans and all the German-only media generated about the band is mostly impenetrable to me.
Steroids are, at their core, anti-inflammatory drugs. spending the better part of 40 years belting out pop songs at the top your lungs is going to destroy anyone's vocal chords. There's no way around that. The comment about them not being musicians is really interesting, since there's a lot of complex things going on their first couple albums. It really does speak to the amazing music machines allow people to create.

As you get older, the vocal cords, just like any other part of the body, lose their flexibility. The steroids might explain his weight. Those and the beer. And age.

I wondered whether he took steroids in about 2003/4 when he injured his knee. He put on a lot of weight then. Lots of people take them to avoid or reduce inflammation and it doesn't surprise me that he does.

"the German group [...] never played live in [the United States]."
Not only the Washington Times's journalist, Keith, is poorly informed -these things happen...- but more astonishingly, Marian made no reference to the couple of live shows back in 1999 and thus did not contradict his interviewer *Scratching head* |

I never knew how vocal chords could be affected as had been posted in the thread. Whenever word about steroids comes into articles around here, it's always something sports-related where it's seriously frowned upon, so imagine my surprise when I read here about them being a help.
