Russ, good morning! W00t, Nikon fraternity brother! (high-five!) I've been having a lot of fun learning how to use both the wide-angle and the telephoto lens, not to mention the camera itself with all of its bells and whistles. It's a blast being able to snap off a hundred pictures on a walk or a trip to the Zoo or downtown, and not use up a single frame of film! ^_^ Here's a pic (slightly modified) that I took a few weeks back:

Having problems with my Canon EOS350D. I have had it for 10 years so should probably upgrade but it has been a good camera.

I keep getting the (apparently infamous) err99 message. It doesn't happen on the preset settings but I don't want to limit myself. It also happens when I use a filter (but it started when I hadn't used the filter for a while). I'm debating buying a new lens but don't want to buy one and discover that I need a new camera after all (or vice versa).

Anyone got any recommendations?

No, not really spent much time on it. I'll deal over the weekend (if I'm awake at all).
