They live in England (and we dont speak german at home at all) and the few weekends they spend in Germany arent enough to learn german to hold long conversations... They dont understand everything (especially when talking fast) and it has nothing to do with being shy... Believe me (or Kaz for example) its not as easy as it sounds... understanding is one thing giving the right answer another (if possible without a long [thinking] gap) but still - the video is funny to watch. anyway [smile2] + + + aw[4]design + + + |

Brilliant interview! So relaxed and funny!
Anni, ich stimme zu. It's really not as easy as people might think. I've lived in Germany going on 7 years now and even though I understand about 95% or more of what is spoken, speaking is quite another thing. My biggest problem is that I use English for 99% of the day so I've not really had a chance to improve my speaking skills so much but I can do it (badly) when I have to. You really have to put yourself in a situation whereby you have to speak the language to be able to communicate or you end up stuck (like me).

I have studied German, so I know its grammatics is hard. Still, although it was twelwe years ago since I last studied it and my grades were poor (never did my homework unfortunately) for the three years (13-15 yrs of age) I still understand quite a lot. So if I would have lived in a country for so many years (which they obviously haven't though ) then I would have learned to answer such simple questions. We have an English director famous here in Sweden named Colin Nutley, whom despite the fact that he has lived here since the 70's, still doesn't speak Swedish in interviews... |

Absolutely true. I remember I watched one concert where there were also the guests from abroad. One of the guests (whose name I've forgotten already) went onto the stage and addressing to the audience very fastly pronounced several sentences in a row. The translator ( and the experienced one, I suppose) seemed to be completely lost... Looking blank he finally said: "Eeee... Mr.N is greeting you..."
Is it truth? |
