Which bands/artists did you listen to before AV ?

We have to admit it. There was a time before Alphaville, before 1984 when we saw the light (for us that are old enough). The questions is: What did we listen to before 1984?

For me (itīs embarrasing), but since Iīm starting this topic, here it comes - this list is probably until about 1982-83, where I finally pulled myself up:

(letīs only name the international bands/artists)

As I remember:
[*]Abba[*]The Beatles/John Lennon/Paul McCartney[*]Cliff Richard (Arrrrggggghhhhhhh)[*]Neil Diamond (even worse)

the rest were danish bands/artists.

I have always loved movie music. As a kid, the first music that really grabbed me, was guys like Ennio Morricone. The first popband I listened to was Ultravox. Later came Duran Duran, Kim Wilde, Nik Kershaw, Jean michel Jarre and many others. It was not until 1990 that I actually got my eyes open to AV. I knew only Forever young and Big in Japan. So one day I bought Forever young and "Smack"!!! - I was a fan.

Im sorry to say, that I actually didnt listen to AV in the 80'.

Believe it or not: Alphaville was first pop/rock music I ever heard. I was born in 1970, but I lived with my parents in Athens/Greece. I played piano and violin and we heard only classical music, also at our private school. Back in Germany 1984, Marian Golds voice was the first thing I heard in that summer on a fair at a round-about...
song was Jet Set...<img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>

The first tape I bought was Welcome to the Pleasuredome by FGTH. The rest of the time listened to my brother's tapes - Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Genesis etc.

Before the year 1984 most of the music I listened to was my big brotherīs records. The ones I liked best of his records were Electric Light Orchestra, Dire Straits and OMD.

In 1984 I got my first record player and the first single I bought was "Holiday" by Madonna. My first album was "Forever young" and I still remember the day when I walked into the record store. I was so excited! I knew this was the day it was released. The lady behind the counter asked me if I wanted to listen to the album before I decided if I wanted to buy it. I said "No need, I know it is great!".

So the year 1984 was the year when it all started for me. I listened to many artists at the time. My favourites were Alphaville, Howard Jones, Nik Kershaw, Duran Duran, Madonna and A-ha.

Alphaville was one of the first bands that I listened to that *I* liked. (unless you count Johnny Cash cause that's my dad's favourite) In fact, as I've said before, Alphaville have a very special place in my heart because I link them directly with the absolute beginning of my musicaholism...heh.

You see, when I was like 7 I had my sister make me a tape of all my favourite songs so I could be cool and have my own music tape : )
Some songs I asked specifically for to have on the tape and others I left her just to add. Well when she was done she gave me the tape and my ULTIMATE favourite songs were Forever Young and A Question of Lust by Depeche Mode. Today they comprise my fav bands! The sad thing about Alphaville though was that I was satisfied with their first album well...until bloody last October..heh. Whereas I went mad with DM over 10 years ago.

You know what made me want to seek out more by Alphaville? Well, about 8 months ago I was in the car driving home and my sister had the Breathtaking Blue in the glove compartment. I had that or top 40 crap..so I put TBB in. I really liked it, especially Romeos. So I played that to death for a few months until last August when I went to L.A for the Depeche Mode convention. While I was there my friend traded me the Different Drum 2cd compilation for a DM bootleg I gave her and well..elevator the 99 remix was on that. Well I loved that too..so then 2 months later I picked up Salvation and the rest is history. I know, I was slow on the uptake..but now I'm in full gear. It only took me what? 14 years to get in gear? LOL... It just amazes me how I had no inclination to check out other Alphaville stuff. Actually, that's not true - I do remeber holding Prostitute when it came out..but it was $38 as an import...

Tara : )
