Alphaville & U2

Does anyone know if U2 have heard of Alphaville or are fans of the band? Most sources that say Bono likes them base this on a post made to the mailing list by a Russian fan. I have attached the post below. It seems rather dubious to me. How was he able to email Bono?

hello the losers and lovers! recently i just emailed down Bono Vox to
ascertain the meaning of his emphasized phrase ".....but it's down to
alphaville..". he replied with the following:
"Good morrow Oleg! Thank ya for visiting us along with unfrequently asked
questions. I'm buzy a little for now but gladly give ya a blitz interview.
At first i was rumored of Alphaville those days we were working on "The
Joshua Tree" concept. I remember once we were loafing in our studio, Edge
felt lousy sick, we were flippantly nattering about some and the radio gear
was on tuned to the local fm powerstation. Suddenly i paid heed to the
melody mutedly flowing out the speaker. Dj he announced Alphaville "Forever
Young" and gave no details. I wondered what it might had been. Our hotshot
prod said then that it's a lowbudget beginner mushrooms from Germany
so-called Alphaville but no supplementary particulars were thrown. I thought
those guys had a good headstart because the song was too polished that way,
virtually no demerits for the tyros, very gentle and ambitious, religiously
and faithfully made. I did instinctly relish it. From then on i lost sight
of Alphaville for donkey's years. Later being in "Zooropa" tour i
accidentally bought that scarlet letter-like sleeved record "Prostitute". I
still have it in my own collection. For me it's barely unusual album,
nothing similar in main-stream, sort of music not for the masses maybe. I
think it's a phenomenal precedent of logically accomplished creation
absolutely. Probably the most original and eccentric, cliche-free release i
ever purchased. Afterall it's profound and inlaid, i rather say, sticking
deep within, kinda production singly for the connoisseurs of highly
aesthetic values. All the songs i'd like to play myself but my record label
could interpret this wrongly. Especially "Parade" thing, so dramatic
mournful unplugged one. I'd love to see videoset of it someday. If i'd be a
car, i'd be Jag, if Alphaville'd be a wristwatch, they'd be Rolex at least.
This comparision may be cynical but true. Alphaville excels as an individual
quality, supreme chic.
Well one morn i was staggering about Cental Park vainly attempting to
complete the
final scheme for "New York". I called to mind a whole assembly of contiguity
but none suited me accurate perfectly. Spontaneously i stumbled across
"Central Park looks like a graveyard" and straightway i recalled Alphaville.
So this is how "but it's down to Alphaville" was born. Nothing striking
though. So sorry i never met them in life.
That's all.
Adios."
Now alphawhalez ya see no luc godart movie, no supermarkets were meant
initially. thank ya 4 your time:))
