Sexyland is awesome, though I can't understand a word Marian is saying throughout half of it. Otherwise it's brilliant.
Nevermore is brilliant. I love the gritty feel that it has. |

I like Sexyland so long as I don't think too much about it. But then it's so enthusiastic despite being about a homeless person sleeping in underground trains and stations.

Where can I read the meanings of each song? Nevermore sounds like it's about someone having a nightmare or something along those lines.. I'd love to read the backstories behind all of the AV songs.

Marian is often vague on this but he posted the story behind Sexyland on the mailing list at yahoogroups. He encourages people to find their own meaning.

That's great. A few of his songs have obvious meanings behind them, such as Fallen Angel (both the title and chorus lyrics give away the meaning of it) yet a bulk majority of them have me stumped.
On a side note: This may be weird, but I think Marian should consider modernizing Into The Dark and maybe even use it on the next album. My biggest hope is Criminal Girl will find it's way to the next album :) |

Did Marian have "State of Dreams" on his mind when composing Enigma? The verses in State of Dreams sounds like when he sings in Enigma "This is what I've been searching for / Trying to break through that blackhole door"

As I see here, many of the fans would not like to realize that the name Alphaville does not cover all of Marian Gold's musical career. It is not enough to speak of Alphaville albums only, and leave out of sight his solo work as well as part of that career.
I mean, after many years, I have listened again to Marian's whole work of music spanning from So Long Celeste era to Crazyshow era (that is early 1990s to early 2000s), and there is nothing comparable to this period in his life in terms of creativeness, originality and high level of music, including the material which has only been released on Dreamscapes. These are, all in all, some 65-70 songs. With this achievement in view, I can only say that the recent albums, Strange Attractor and Catching Rays On Giant do not even seem to come close to any of his previous works in fineness, deepness, and quality. The question, therefore, is rather, can an artist lose much of his force of creativity with the advance of time? I am afraid that this is the case. Only such songs as Tempelhof and London Sky seem to be evidence in the opposite direction. |
