---------------------------------------

I'm sort of surprised there's not more discussion about this already here (maybe that's just because this is a show in the US and our European friends are like, "psssht" :D )

Sounds like an incredible experience (four days, two concerts, numerous meet-and-greets with the band, etc.) and I'm glad Marian is going to achieve his life-long dream of performing at the Whisky, but:

$2400 (or $1600) per person is a lot of money. I think any of us here would qualify as "super fans" of the band, but is anyone here thinking of going?

Let me be super clear: I am in no way criticizing Marian or the band's ability to make money. They should reap whatever rewards they can however they can. I hope this event sells out, and quickly. I suspect this will be an expensive production to put on, between the marquee venue, taking over a hotel, etc. I am merely rolling around in my head if the level that has been set here is realistic.

What does everyone else think? About the event, the idea of a band (any band, not just Alphaville) putting together an exclusive, weekend-long experience like this, etc? If you're not interested, what would it take for you to become interested?

nicole 09 Oct 2017 17:25

I think Marian living his dream is great! He deserves it and after all those years of hard work, he owes it to himself. If I had the money I’d love to go. It bothers me because I live in Illinois and California is just a 4 hour plane ride, which is nothing. It’s just so expensive; the VIP package and of course the plane tickets. I don’t have that kind of money and it is disappointing that I am unable to go. However, I was fortunate enough to be able to meet Marian at the Chicago show several months ago and thought I’d never had that opportunity. I hope those who go have an amazing time!

andrewbw 09 Oct 2017 18:46

Yeah, what was at the center of my thinking as I wrote my post was, "Could I afford this? Yes. But am I interested enough to spend that amount of money seeing Alphaville? I'm not so sure." And for a similar reason as you, Nicole: I'm grateful I got the chance to finally see AV live this summer. With that, my desire to spend this sort of money to see them again is diminished, regardless of how lavish and unique the experience will be.

Clare 09 Oct 2017 19:14

I'm seriously considering it. The fact that's putting me off is how inaccessible it will be for many of my friends.

Foolship1077 10 Oct 2017 00:35

Is it any wonder why it's only 500 tickets?

I may not be able to head down there, but hopefully, it's part of another US tour. Maybe to some new locations...

(Please come to Seattle...)

MalilaM 10 Oct 2017 03:19

Well, just for the sake of the band, I hope it's sold out and Marian has a great time, but I've seen many AV hardcore fans being put off by the steep prices and this all-or-nothing package.

@Foolship: It's a small venue, and only that amount of people can fit.
For what it's been said, it's not a new tour, but Marian's fulfilled dream to play at the Whisky a Go Go, where many important artists have played or even started their careers.

wii 10 Oct 2017 10:36

Andrew, you are right, we should be talking about this. I added a poll to the thread, let's see how that goes. I voted no, just too expensive. If an option comes up with concerts only for a fraction of the cost, I would consider it, but I doubt that will happen.

Very few fans I know about will join this because of the costs, but we'll see [wink]

4everyoung 10 Oct 2017 12:38

I'll go if someone pays the airfare hotel bill and tickets thank you [laugh]
best wishes John btw I'm in the UK.

AmberVonAvalon 10 Oct 2017 14:36

I'm excited about it. I spent that much to go to Cancun to see Alphaville last year and this offers more goodies.

My friend Kian will be coming with me (she also joined me in Cancun last year and two shows in August this year in California)

Halfnelson 10 Oct 2017 14:51

It's a no for me for obvious reasons. Great news for Marian.

As a fan obsessed in having all songs in all their published versions, the exclusive audio/videos goodies sounds like a double penalty for us. Hopefully they will be available in the coming years.

Anyway, Marian will fullfill one of his dearest dream & I'm sincerily very happy for him. Have a great times all of U, happy tax-payers! Don't be strangers for reports & memories!

wii 10 Oct 2017 15:26

I would say, lower the price with 50% then it would still be expensive, but much more reasonable considering the hotel and venue, but I don't think that will happen...

Thanks for adding the poll! That's a great idea.

I voted "no," but I think I'd change my mind for the same reasons as you: If a new option comes up later to just attend one or both of the concerts, I'd seriously consider it. I'd be willing to pay $500 or a little more for that, since they'll be really unique shows, I think—not the regular setlist.

lorenzosusanna 10 Oct 2017 17:26

Me and my husband would like to be in Los Angeles but the price is crazy. Only to the concerts if we can have the tickets. Bye

wii 11 Oct 2017 08:35

I'm in contact with Brady Harper about the event, I will let you know when I can say more.

But please keep voting [wink]

ApolloMan 11 Oct 2017 10:10

I'm a lifelong Alphaville fan & still remember hearing the 12" remix of Forever Young for the first time. Despite the difficulties of getting hold of their music here in the UK in the late 80s and 90s, I've managed to get hold of all the items I wanted, though I've yet to see them live.
I've joined today because I feel quite strongly about the planned LA concerts. One one hand I'm genuinely delighted that Marian is making his dream come true. He deserves it and I guess all fans will want to support this - me included. The problem is that I can't support it in it's current format. I'm a Dad with two kids and financial commitments, and a partner who believes music should cost no more than a CD (good job she didn't see the bill for Dreamscapes....). I suppose this puts me in a category that wouldn't make me a target audience for such a costly event. But there's no option there at present for people like me who want to say "thanks" to Marian & to contribute to the success of this event in a lesser way to help make it happen. At the moment I feel a bit like this is an "Impossible Dream" for me.
In reality even a 50% price saving for the event wouldn't help me, but how about putting together a package for those of us who can't travel to LA? I'd be more than happy to pay handsomely for a package to cover a live stream of the concerts and for any CDs/DVDs that may be planned. In this way I will have the opportunity to help make this happen.

furtive 11 Oct 2017 13:36

The organizers could succeed with this project if they eliminate the hotel component and meet-and-greets and reduce the duration to two nights. For back-to-back evenings of rarities performed, they could still charge a premium. Just not a four-figure one…

wii 11 Oct 2017 13:57

The hotel itself is not the problem. The 2nd package does not include hotel, which saves 500 dollars. I checked the hotels in the area, and 500 dollars sounds reasonable for that location and time. We'll see what happens, there's still lots of time for changes to this event.

This is a great idea. Even if a less expensive, concert-only (or whatever) ticket becomes available, I'd still have to think long and hard about whether I could manage another trip to California "just" to see a concert (as much as my wife and I loved the show in San Jose, it wasn't just tickets, it was airfare, hotels, rental car, meals... we don't regret the money we spent for an instant, but you can only splurge like that so often when you've got a family to support) The ability to support the band through merchandise or a live stream would be a great option.

MalilaM 11 Oct 2017 22:39

I have paid huge amounts of money to travel for "just" one AV concert and it has been worth every penny (and every month paying the debt off). The extras have been to visit new countries, meet the great friends I've made in this community and, definitely, the experience of being there to listen to all those songs live is one of the best things that have happened to me.
Since my current job won't allow me to commit with such a huge debt and because of the uncertainty of a trip to the USA as a Mexican, this is a straight no for me. Apart from that, even if I could, I'm not sure I would enjoy it as much without so many of my friends.

Uncertainty? What uncertainty? Unlike that facing U.S. tourists in Mexico (http://cnn.it/2v9OWsd), there is no uncertainty facing Mexican tourists in the U.S. Never has been.

JaJaJa 12 Oct 2017 15:02

There is the uncertainty of getting an entry to the US at all. And that btw. goes for many nations, also EU ones for example! So if you have got a valid visa it won't necessarily mean you can enter the thing. And if you have paid an amount like the one for this event plus for a flight, to have to return would make you specially happy.

NelsonF 12 Oct 2017 15:06

Obtaining a tourist visa to the U.S. from Mexico or the European Union is amazingly easy.

MalilaM 12 Oct 2017 22:06

@NelsonF: I know two people who are (or were) frequent travellers to the USA, but weren't allowed to renew their visas. One person close to me was rejected at the airport with a valid visa. In my own experience as a foreigner, renewing my visa wouldn't be a simple process, plus it would take me at least two days off-work; not counting that it would also add to the cost of the trip.

@Ja^3: I could very well be rejected from any country in Europe the next time, but so far everything has been easier for me there. And I felt more welcomed too. [smile]

wii 13 Oct 2017 07:42

I wrote on my Facebook page about this event, and asked: "Who's joining this?". Got lots of replies, but read this from Carl in Sweden (copied here with permission):

Who's joining this?
So I said to my wife: ”Oh Patti, Ain’t it strange but we now face New horizons and I know this will mean some Danger in your paradise, but we need to talk (although you’re not In the mood).” So, we brought the family together and (If) the audience was listening. I said: “There won’t be a Summer in Berlin this year and oh yes that’s right, no Jerusalem either, I know we had plans for that but you can be On the beach as much as you like, play in Patricia´s Park and there will be some Summer rain when you can have indoor activities and wait for Tomorrow. They asked me why so I said: “You know The one thing I love is to live Today, therefore I want to live through The impossible dream and be in Control of myself. I will always be Here by your side but we need to turn our pockets Inside out so your (Universal) daddy can fulfill his Fantastic dream. Caroline and Ariana, your Jet set days are over for at least Five years”.
My wife said: “Say it ain’t so Joe” and I answered: “Some people will travel, some will not but I want to see this Crazy show. Please have Faith in me and I promise it will Change the World. There will be Headlines about this and maybe they will call us Fools and maybe the Next generation will talk about this For a million years. I know this will throw us Into the dark financially but thanks to our 20th century savings I can travel to Dangerous places and treasure that Golden feeling and truly state that Life is king. You know you can always Call me… (Lies, no time for that…)”. She looked at me, asking herself whether this was Heaven or hell and said: “Something is wrong here but I suppose that is how the Mysteries of love works And I wonder how our marriage turned Upside down? You need to Wake up!” So I woke up and asked myself: “What is love? Is a Return to paradise still possible?”
Those were the days back in Berlin 2004 and Paris 2014 but we have now reached a Paradigm shift. There will always be more Afternoons in Utopia, I will keep the Flame and try to stay Forever young and it won’t be the End of the world (just one of The things I didn’t do) but next time you Carry your flag please Dance with me in a Heartbreak city nearby. Wishful thinking? Anyway, the answer is unfortunately no.

andrewbw 13 Oct 2017 16:56

That's brilliant. [laugh]

wii 15 Oct 2017 08:05

Kaz 15 Oct 2017 11:10

A lot for what is basically two concerts and an aftershow party.

wii 15 Oct 2017 12:46

Yes, but I can't get the price further down, could remove the entire recording, but that would be a pity, since it's such a special event.

andrewbw 15 Oct 2017 16:03

Man, I have to give this some serious thought. I have lots of friends I can stay with in LA so that’s not a problem, and flights from Denver to LA are cheap, but... yeah, as Kaz says, that’s a lot or money. No criticism of the band or promoters or anyone, they all have to make a living. I’m happy they were willing to reconsider the packages and price points at all.

MalilaM 15 Oct 2017 21:18

That looks slightly more reasonable. Hopefully more fans can attend. :)

wii 16 Oct 2017 08:32

I think so too, still very expensive, but maybe I can manage, we'll see...

Brad 22 Oct 2017 18:24

Hi All,

I have my golden ticket. I've been running around singing the song straight out of Willy Wonka. j/k I'm about 60 miles away from L.A. so I have no choice but to go. I'm planning on taking the train in from South Orange County and will be staying at the hotel. When you calculate it out, the price seems totally reasonable to me. It does seem to be a lot more than just a concert.

The music of Alphaville has been a big part of my life and this seems like a climactic way to celebrate the positive influence it has had. There is no other band I would do this for.... not even close. I do love a lot of other music, but nothing is like Alphaville. Isn't that funny?

Can't wait for May!! (rightfully shouldn't it be on the 17th of June?) :)

Bye!

Brad

AmberVonAvalon 24 Oct 2017 17:05

Sweet! Will see you there, Brad.

My friend Kian and I are going. She lives in the general area and I'll be flying down from Seattle.

"Dear Fans, we have had a strong opening week! The weekend will go on as planned in May (Thank you all who have already booked your spots!). If you intend to be present, be sure to reserve your spot, and let us know of any questions! "
