View Full Version : Beatles !!!

The Beatles became my favourite group as soon as I first heard them in 79/80 ("It won´t be long"), when I was 6,5 years old. And still they are my second favourite group after AV.

I read in an interview with Marian that he likes them, but that they have had no influence on AV:s music/lyrics. Bullshit!!! They have!
I know four AV/Gold-songs which are influenced by them. Gold has even said so about two of those in earlier interviews.

Now you wonder which songs I am thinking about!? Well I leave you thinking about it for a while and we will see if you can figure it out yourselves.

I´ve always loved The Beatles, grew up with them as my mom was/is a very big fan.

Which songs are you talking about ?

I prefer Rolling Stones. (The early London years anyway). They were much more dynamic and bold. While Beatles sang "I wanna hold you hand", Stones had much darker lyrics and dirty sound.

I do like Beatles though. Especially some of the later work.

I went through a phase where I had every Capitol release of the Beatles albums, and I played them until they wouldn't pay anymore, then I got some more on CD. I'd say my top 6 albums are:
Rubber Soul/Revolver (depends on what side of the pond)
Abbey Road
White Album
62-66 greatest hits
Let it Be
Seargent Pepper
Best beatles song I'd love to hear Marian do:
Tomorrow never knows

Hey Avil...we dont like them but show a little respect...thats not nice
What people will say about AV in 10-20 years?
I know that they are Forever Young but you have to understand that every fan sees his beloved band as FY... we gotta respect everyone if we want them to respect us.
OK?

@ville - forever and ever.

Funny, I was just having a discussion the other day about the Beatles. I was wondering why they got so big. Why was their music so different that they exploded the way they did? I was watching a commercial for some biography on the Beatles and I thought that Paul MacCartney looked like a little popsicle stick figure with a head be-bopping around. He's definitely not what I would consider as someone possessing star charisma. He looks like a little bouncy and cuddly boy. Maybe that was his charm. Yeah probably, but what do I know?
My mom (or as Trent would say Me Mum ;) ) had St Pepper, and I remember studying the cover when I was around 5 years old and it really scared me. Have you ever really studied it? It's rather freaky to a little child.
Enough babbling..that's all...

HEY!!! I seen McCartney in '91 and Damnit at to hell he is not old!!!!!!!!! HE STILL ROCKS!! I have loved the Beatles since I was a kid, All bands get older, Alphaville one day will be the same and some person is going to be telling you that Alphaville is old and history, That doesn't make it unlistenable or even bad music, that makes it classic...Just cause something was from a long time ago doesn't make it not good, I still listen to the Beatles...and probably will till the day I die..They are forever young to me just like Alphaville..*Gets off his soapbox, grabs a smoke and calms the bloody hell down* Ok, sorry that may have been harsh but I love the Beatles damnit

Nice to see that I am not the only AV-fan who also is a Beatles-fan!

Here comes two of the Beatles-inspired AV-songs:

- Ivory tower (Glass onion)
Marian said in an interview that "Glass onion" which has the same lyric concept made him write "Ivory tower"!
By the way "Glass onion" is in my opinion one of the weakest Beatles songs melodically. But I like the lyrics and the concept. And (of course) "Ivory tower" is much better melodically!

- Romance (Hello goodbye)
Some of the lyrics in "Romance" are borrowed from "Hello goodbye":
"I say high, you say low. You say stop, I say go, go, go"
In this case I must say that "Hello goodbye" is much better in every way.

Here comes ten really great Beatles songs:
- Something (Harrison)
- Here, there and everywhere (McCartney)
- Let it be (McCartney)
- While my guitar gently weeps (Harrison)
- Help! (Lennon)
- Ticket to ride (Lennon)
- Across the Universe (Lennon)
- Hey Jude (McCartney)
- Eleanor Rigby (McCartney)
- Here comes the sun (Harrison)

These are just some of the among 150 Beatles songs I really like!

Andre : shouldn't it be "When my guitar ..." ?
It's a beatiful song, i got it on the vynil double White album !
Eleanor Rigby is sooo great, maybe my fav.
I also like the consequence of the end of Abbey Road, you know, "here comes the sun" " boys ! you gonna carry that ..." "you never give your money ..." " and in the end , the love ..."
this is why the Beatles are considered to be the best band ever, it's simply a piece of genius work with great talent for London's boys .

No... it's "While my guitar gently weeps...
and who's guitar is gently weeping on the solo...?
Eric Clapton
Another really good version of that song was done by the Jeff Healy Band.

Yes, it is WHILE my guitar gently weeps. And it is Eric Clapton who is playing the guitar solo.
Another great version of this song is the one featured on "Beatles Anthology 3", which includes only George and an accoustic guitar.

Wow, great to find a topic on this marvellous band - even if the still-alive members are already elderly. [wink]

The reason why I thought to discuss a bit on The Beatles and the members is because I LOOOOOVE THEM [smile2] - and on 15th May Sir Paul comes to Budapest for a show and - of course - me and my husband will be there. [bouncy] Watching his brand new live DVD "Back in the U.S." I can say that despite he is already over 60, he is still GREAT, he simply ROCKS and kicks into ass... [smile2] He seems to be full of energy and vitality - and of course I'm VERY VERY curious to see him live, also because it will be the first time for him as well to come to Hungary... (Of course, if anyone's interested, I will tell you about the concert in details. [wink] [smile])

At the risk of being controversial...here goes...I don't really like the Beatles *ducks for cover*. I do like the stuff they did in the late 60s (like '67 onwards 'til they broke up) and I love the solo stuff that George Harrison and John Lennon did. But that's all...

And 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' is one of the classic songs of all time.

I like much of The Beatles' works, although I'm not very fond of some of their hits, like for example "Let it be" and "Something".
Five great Beatles songs:
– Strawberry Fields
– We can work it out
– Revolution
– Norwegian Wood
– Eleanor Rigby

I love "And I love her" because we could play and sing it great together with my brother.

My second eldest sister (she's almost 60 now) used to have a major crush on Paul McCartney, long before I was born! Not sure about my eldest sister or my Italian half-sister...

I think a lot of it depends on the era in which you were born. I was born about 3 or so years after the Beatles made it big in the UK. As my mother was not a huge Beatles fan, I never really listened to their music as I was growing up, but I have come to appreciate some of it on my own.

I was 15 at the time and I was in French class at school. A friend has a radio on under her desk. When the news was announced, she, I and a few others started crying and the teacher wondered what the hell was going on, but she carried on with the lesson regardless, unaware that history had just been made...

To become serious as well again, JL played an important part in my life, although I discovered him
only a few years after the murder (I´m a bit younger, even if it´s hard to believe...). His charismatic voice and especially his convictions had big influences. There are two famous interview-
books (I think one of 1970, the other one was the last before his death) I was that lucky to receive by my father, who had the opportunity to go to west-germany before the wall came down), I would
recommend to read to everybody (no matter of the age). When I read magazines or watch TV today, I come to the conclusion, that those were the times when contents and idealism seemed to be less rare than today. But don´t get me wrong: He´s no icon to me like AV or anybody else ain´t.

Kaz
07 May 2003, 19:18
@ Justus

I think you're right about the idealism factor of bygone years - it's just not there anymore. Just living everyday life from day to day is hard in this day and age, when the world has changed so much since the late 80s.

People listen to 'Imagine' by Lennon, thinking oh what a wonderful world that would be, not realising the deep message inbewteen the lines - if only they would really 'listen'.

One more slightly off-topic point - when listening to 'Cosmopolitician', I am reminded of John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band's 'Give Peace A Chance'.

JaJaJa
07 May 2003, 19:34
@ Kaz

I agree.
"Cosmopolitician" gives courage to hold on to your visions (sounds like a bloody politician...naja...)

Andreas
09 May 2003, 12:51
I was the one who started this topic. Then I gave out a question which I only answered by half, which 4 AV-songs that I know has been influenced by Beatles.

It is:
- Carol Masters: In an interview with Marian, which I read at the old AV-page by Dan, it said that Eleanor Rigby and Carol Masters was the same person.
- Cosmopolitician: The seabirdish sounds are borrowed from "Tomorrow never knows".
- Romance: Lots of the lyrics are borrowed from "Hello goodbye".
- Ivory tower: Marian said in another interview that he tried to make a song like "Glass onion", which lyrics refers to old songs by themselves.

And now there is one more, when they have recorded "Something", my favourite Beatle-track of all time (has been my favourite by them since about 1982)!
But as I wrote on another subject here, the Beatles version is MUCH better, George´s voice is superb in that song and the arrangement could not be any better! The Alphaville version is also good and I like it, but I would have liked it much more if I had not heard the original! Anyway I miss the intro at several places in the AV-version, and I also miss some wonderful chords in the middle part.

And @SLAM
You are a bit wrong with the Ringo family situation. Ringo is married to Barbara Bach, true (he had the best taste of women of the Beatles). But they have no children in common. Even if they had, it is not sure that they would be good-looking, Ringo is sort of not known as "a good-looking man".
Barbara has at least one child, a daughter who is lesbian and was involved in some sort of scandal about a year ago I think.
Ringo has three children with his earlier wife (now diseased in cancer) Maureen, with whom he divorsed in the 70´s. The oldest son, Zak Starkey, is a drummer like his father, and played on all tracks on an album by the Lightning Seeds from 1999. I don´t remember the title of the album, but it was good and I recommend it!

slam
10 May 2003, 11:13
@Andreas: Thanks for the information. You see, I think that Barbara Bach has been the best Bond girl ever, though "Spy Who Loved Me" was filmed/released as early as 1977!!! She was very beautiful at the time(she was 30 years). A real knockout...

Tell me more about the scandal her daughter was involved in...

16 May 2003, 22:32
Well, guys and girls....

Yesterday was THE DAY. Paul McCartney visited Budapest and played a FANTASTIC show. This was his first ever Hungarian gig (as much as I know, he has never ever been to Hungary yet) and I can tell you from the deepest of my heart that this was far the best concert of my life. He played mostly Beatles-songs, like Yesterday, Sgt. Pepper, Can't Buy Me Love or All My Loving, but also Wings-songs, like Jet, Band on the Run, Live and Let Die (with fantastic pyrotechnics) or My Love... I really don't want to make this "review" long, but I'd like to tell you that I have NEVER ever seen such a performer who communicated with the audience in THEIR mother tongue (in this case in Hungarian) - and I must add that he did it FLUENTLY... - he was joking with us, made us sing very very often... so, in a word, he was full of energy and vitality (despite that he is 61 years old...) and I can say that his musicians are all excellent too - and they also tried to speak some Hungarian words... So, in a word, I enjoyed it very very much and this is absolutely true for my husband, and even my mother-in-law (who had been there, too) enjoyed it. My knees hurt because I was jumping all the way long, my shoulders are in pain because of applausing and clapping my hands for the whole show and I even lost my voice for a short while, because I was screaming my throat out, like those girls in the films recorded back in the 1960's at Beatles-performances... [smile2] God bless you, Paul. [smile] [love2] I can only hope that you will return to Hungary someday...

17 May 2003, 12:24

During/after the show...Did he talk about John or George?, I mean, about the time Beatles had their golden time.

Agnes
17 May 2003, 12:47
@slam:

Oh, yes, when he played "Something" as the tribute for George, he told us that whenever George invited guests for dinner to his house, sooner or later, he brought his ukulele and offered the guests to try to play that... [smile] - and when he sang "Blackbird", he mentioned that they used to call girls "birds" in the UK when they were young. [smile2] I guess that was all... but that is absolutely true that I'm still feeling dizzy and my knees still hurt... [smile2]

@Mags:

absolutely! [thumbup] Yes, you are totally right; I have never ever seen any performer who would be so polite, so humane and yet so natural-behaving like Paul has been to us. (And due to other reviews from his previous concerts, he did the same at the other venues, e.g. greeting the crowd in THEIR mother tongue having fun with them.)

And let me add that despite his age, he is still damn good-looking... [wink]

*has a very very serious Macca-fever* [love] [drool] [tongue]
