i love most of alphavilles work, but there is something special about the sound on the FY album. does anyone know anything about what gear has been used on this recording? Is it just me or should AV go back to using more analouge stuff?

Well, as far as I know, Alphaville used analog synths on their latest album Salvation, which I honestly think is a better album than Forever Young, which had a very naive sound to it - Salvation is much more "mature".

you're right Willy - Salvation is FY's older brother. they are from the same family but a little different.

@ville - forever and ever.

I think that Salvation is better than FY in some way...As you said Willy, Salvation sounds more mature...

actually what i`m interested in is the specific synth models, drum machines etc...
of corse the new albums sound bigger and better(state of the art).I`m talking about a certain distinctive (a kind of metallic)synthsound that I`ve neaver heard on any other recording. I agree that the sound is a bit naive, but also the simplicity is perhaps some of the albums strength?

In my opinion FY is better than Salvation, you can call FY "naive", but I just call it more "orignal" than Salvation, which doesnt just have the same passion and enthusiasm* as the other albums (*if you don't count Prostitute, which is more cruel and dark than any other AV-album)... there is just something so intriguing and vital about FY and AIU, that makes them better in MY eyes and ears... but this doesn't mean that I wouldn't like Salvation, it's so wonderful and soothing - real SALVATION for my restless spirit...

Aah... The "Roland Jupiter 8"... The king of all analog synthesizers!!! What a lovely list of classic synts. However I thought that the Prohpet 5 was used on Forever young.

Avil
05 Nov 2001, 19:53
But, nowadays you can get like all sounds without any synths...
Just today I got a musicprogram that my friend in Daily Planet now uses (he is selling out all his synths) and there you find everything you need!
Itīs charming with synths, yes, but maybe the synthezisesī time has past...

05 Nov 2001, 21:19
I agree with Avil... It's kind of funny to hear the old synth-guys speak devoutly about their analogue synths. I really can't understand their point...It's like using horses instead of cars!

see me through - i'm a soulman...

Avil
05 Nov 2001, 22:29
Thatīs very true. I love synthezises, but some day people have to see the fact that rget belong to the past. The future is not in 1000 years...itīs the next moment you breath.

But...let's not get negative here! Comparing the horse-car thing to this... well, think about it; using horses instead of cars wouldn't be that bad at all, actually it would be friendlier towards the environment :)... synths are just so brilliant I think, they are my tools, if I work with music, I work with synths (or guitars)... you just can't escape the fact that synths provide brilliant and wonderful sounds...just love 'em...:)...

I just have to say: The sound of "SLAM" on the 1984 Forever Young is PHANTASTIC BEAUTIFUL!!!
Even if the 1992 remix on FH by dear Mr Lloyd is maybe more "upbeat" you canīt even compare it with the old 80:th synthesizer sound. It is just something about it I canīt explain.
It's more... pure. And it is, in my oppinion the best they have ever done.
And when Iīm on the subject "SLAM", hey the FP version. I F***ING LOOOOVE IT!!!!!!

I've heard no other versions of SLAM than the '92 version on First Harvest, and I didn't like it... I think it sounds much better in the original, it's far more brilliant when the beat changes from quavers to sixteenths in the end, and the sound and everything are just as perfect as they can be... you can't possibly make this song any better!...

When I listen to the instrumental part in the end of SLAM (FY version), I can just close my eyes, dream away, and understand that a song canīt get anymore beautiful and PERFECT as that. And when I listen to it, I just simply FEEL GOOD!!! Itīs wonderful!
Thank you dear Mr Lloyd/Mertens for the arrangement and thank you dear Mr Gold for the words and the VOICE!!!

And it was the most that special synth sound and my synth hero behind it... where the more freaky synth stuff get the space it deserves...<img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle> Freak out till you drop !

as a matter infact there is no specific AV sound..but because FY was the very first dics we might count it to be the original sound..but think about the demo vers of FY form 83..i doesnt sound much like the record FY..i think it sounds like 92mix of SLAM..

FY:most synths, and hidden sounds you can only discover with phones
AIU:more guitars,more utopia
BTB:more usual instruments and different love songs..some comedic songs
FH:a mix of old songs
P:dark,strange lyrics,strange sound,different styles
S:what else than a salvation??more grovy,more dance
SN&AL:live ,only live
DS:something is missing..i guess its Bernhard Lloyd

so where is this specific sound??

I would say that in fact there IS a specific AV-sound. It goes a red line through out all of their works.
Itīs the feeling, the AV-essence, itīs there. Itīs the connection between each album. Yes, the albums sounds very much different, but still they are simmular in many ways...

They have this special feeling, and I would say a contributory cause is Marians beautiful and unique voice, which in many ways are the very essence of Alphaville.
that, along with their beautifully arrangement and poetic touch to each song is what makes them my heroes.
And there you also have the red-line through out theirs career.

You're not deaf or stupid...it's just not something that is sticking out there like a sore thumb...And as someone else stated...maybe your bass or treble aren't set right and that is why it is not as audible to you as it is to us...Do you have bass and treble settings on your cd player? If so I suggest fooling with that a wee bit and seeing if that makes it any better for you...BUT!! No one here is "stupid" We are Alphavillians!!!!!!

today I listened a bit extra on the song, and heard the hallelujah part!!!
Iīve missed it before because I always thought that it was the synth, not a choir!

I have a very not-hightech CD-player Iīm afraid. No bass or treble settings. Nothing I can adjust or fool with. Itīs a relative small portable Sony. So maybe itīs not that audible too me. I havenīt tried to hear it since you gave me the exact time, though. Will try tonight. thanx mate!

Eyup!!! Sounds like you have a P.O.S. cd player....time to get a new one or borrow someones...Just to hear Hallelujah!! Oh will the hype be up to your expectations by the time you hear it now??? Or will it be a "That's all?" feeling...Oh the anticipation!! HeH!

I will tell you all of my feelings of the "hallelujah"-choir tomorrow. Stubborn as I am, I will hear it on my CD.
You see, my CD is an AV fan too!!

BTW... The end of the "To Germany With Love" seems to be a set of different sounds: laughing, screaming, 'hallelujah' and that sample in the very end... strange...

I agree russ, I guess when people are talking about the old AV-sound they are talking about the FY-album.
I mean nowadays, you canīt say that all albums have a special style...because they havenīt!
