Should Deamscapes 6 have been a Studio Album?
The tracks on this CD are absolutley brilliant. With the use of the band, Marian's vocals, and Jayney Diamond's lyrics, it was a very strong collaboration between these artists, along with John Altman's arrangement of some of the songs, it would have made another Forever Young / Afternoon in Utopia.
The Disc is full deep in melodic harmonies backed up by the London Philharmonic Orchestra that brings Marian's singing to the fore. The band turned a point after Dreamscapes, and some of the tracks in the box were used afterwards. But Dreamscapes 6, personally, is the best disc. If you ever want to sit down and relax, in the bath, on a sofa, or just relax with a cup of coffee, this is the album for you. Dreamscapes 6 01. If the Audience Was Listening (Demo 2) 02. Waves 03. Nostradamus 04. Mysterion 05. Change the World (Demo 1) 06. Script of a Dead Poet 07. Elegy 08. Pandora's Lullaby (Opera Version) 09. Welcome to the Sun (Retro Version) 10. Beautiful Girl (Piano Piece) 11. Caroline (Demo 1) 12. Carry Your Flag 13. Cosmopolitician (Demo 1) 14. Twelve Years (Orchestral Version) 15. Forever Young (Unplugged Version) |
If I had to guess, a number of these tracks were United contenders (when it was humorously referred to as "Untitled"), specifically tracks 1, 3, 6 and 12.
Twelve Years is, IMO, the definitive version of Sweet Needles of Success. For one, it isn't mastered badly, and secondly, the orchestral backing makes it better. Anyways, I'd say my favorite disc in the set is #5 since it pretty much covers So Long Celeste's production from start to finish. Maybe the fact that this album is my most favorite album of all time comes into play lol. Maybe its an unpopular opinion, but I think SLC was butchered when the tracks were remixed and made more "poppy". The only track which I think sounds better on that album is "Today". The rest were messed with way too much! The demo of "Change the World" is incredible. Apart from Marian's vocal being slightly off in some spots, it sounds a bit better than the final mix I think. |
Well, if you like to track the boxset, it starts wit Demos from the early tracks. The live album then splits the boxset, and drives into new demos. The fact about disc 6 is the Orchestral move, and the arrangement and lyrics being outside Alphaville.
I agree that Change The World is brilliant and should have been released as a single from the boxset (Which they never did). |
Yep, true. I'd say I'm not like a lot of AV fans, since I very much prefer the CrazyShow-era of tracks over the 80s material.
I'm contemplating on buying CrazyShow sometime soon as I love the tracks on it (well, the ones I've heard anyways) What's your opinion on the alternate mix of "The Other Side of You"? I prefer that one to the one which was released as a B-side. Lots more polish to it. Especially the drums. |
I agree with both of you: 6ix is my favorite dreamscapes & 5ive is basicly 'So Long Celeste - Original Albert & the Heart of Gold version".
My 'Untitled' tracklist: 01 Danger In Your Paradise 02 Caroline 03 Feathers And Tar 04 Missionary 05 For The Sake Of Love 06 Change The World 07 Cosmopolitician 08 Soulman 09 In Bubblegum 10 If the Audience Was Listening 11 Nostradamus 12 Script of a Dead Poet 13 Elegy 14 Carry Your Flag 15 Here By Your Side 16 My Brothers In China |
ooh, interesting, though HBYS was meant to be on Salvation (the last track specifically). Here's a link:
https://web.archive.org/web/20020205...phy/index.html Go to "unavailable" and you'll see both Salvation and Untitled mentioned, along with Strange Attractor (1993) :) |
Definitely should have been one... I am so grateful to have it on DS and I wish I could once get it in "full HD" studio album quality. Would have been one of the best AV albums, maybe the best. Sheer brilliance.
