Alphaville without Marian...or Bernd ?

I was just thinking...Would AV still be AV if for exemple Bernhard left the band, and there was only Marian left...(or the other side)? I mean,the one´s left would keep the name AV,but would it be the same?Personally I can´t imagine AV without both Marian and Bernd.

Honestly ? I don´t think it would make any difference. Marian does almost all the work anyway, and with the musicians from the liveband and others he could do fine by himself.

I agree with you stardustdawn and Avil. Marian´s solo albums are not nearly as good as any Alphaville album (OK perhaps "TBB"). So Bernhard must have a big say in the final product.

But maybe Martin Lister can do the same job?

I miss Frank Mertens for what he did for Alphaville. I mean, without Frank, has Big In Japan, Sounds Like a Melody and Forever Young, Summer In Berlin and so an... never came true.

Ricky Echolette tried to match the empty hole after Frank Mertens but honestly in my opinion he never did it... So that fact when Ricky left Alphaville it was for me not a big deal.

I have a &quot;Impossible Dream&quot; that Frank will return to Marian and Bernd and take AV to the top of every list again... and made a spectacular Alphaville final before anyone of them is too old.

I'm looking forward to the new Marian &amp; Bernd AV studio album. It will be very interesting...

Alphaville is definitely both Marian and Bernhard working together... I think additional musicians for 'flavor and content' is a good thing. I do miss the guitars, and I think a guitar player is a good permenant addition, if any more permenant personnel were to be added. Definitely adding a guitar player with his or her own identifiable style, not just a good mimic, though. Someone in a class like Jaime w=West-Oram of the Fixx. (not exactly like him, but an identifiable sound and playing style that can stand up to counterpoint Marian's vocals. Bernhard makes everything move well musically, and writes great arrangements, but the same guitar tone and style used repeatedly will be less wearing than the same synth patch used time and again.

Frank definitely was a big loss for AV, but why are all you guys so rude to ricky? He brought a even more experimental, hidden and genious sound to Alphaville...so mysterious...songs with Ricky - such as "For a million" are my absolute favourites and I think also "point of know return" was more Ricks than Franks taste! These are songs who are much more significant for the soul of AV than Big in Japan. well, they failed to score, sure... - but they made AV even more special to me! I`m pretty curious about tzhe 2002 ALBUM: I fear when I listen to DrSc9 or AP - which are both brilliant, but nevertheless...- that Ricks influence was bigger than any of us expected and that we gonna miss him very much!
AV without Marian or Bernd would be indiscussable, a horrible idea! But I hope they can bear the weight of expectations just together without bringing down AV!

To me, Bernd is a crutual part of the AV spirit. Also i believe that Marian and Bernd are the perfect creative match, because they are so unlike eachother and have very different approach to the musicmaking. Together they create a good balance of their combined talents. And without Bernd I fear that Marian will be less inspired and the music will lack some outside influence and idea.

This Is what happened to the Dreamscapes 9 project, and I think thats why it dosent live up to the usual quality of AV.

i think that AV is bern and marian..but AV changed form when frank left the band and rick came in..ofcourse i have to admit that i like FY much more than AIU and BTB,but i cant imagine a day without dance with me and anyway..or a song like Ariana...they make my day.to those who doesnt like guitars and AV..streetside romeos is one perfect part of AV that will always be close to my heart.

about salvation i feel like it was a new era of AV..AV in the 90´s..you know techno sound and all that..i liked it from the first tone..or i loved it.

Just heard that someone said that he believed that Bernhard was out of AV!
He said that AV just said that he still is in AV, but that isn´t true!

Of course it is true.
When I spoke (wrote) with Bernd some time ago, he said that he is still in AV, but he is just taking a break from always working with Marian. That why he has his Atlantic Popes, and Marian his solo and Sputnik!

But it doesn´t mean that he is out out out!

I must disagree here.For me a band must stick together in and out of stage,a member who doesnt want to share that,is not a member anymore..(my opinion),also I do think Marian has been Alphaville's soul from the beginning (though I'm sad Frank left as he is a very talented guy and made a great job with the FOREVER YOUNG album).And if you think about it for a minute and remember the old days they always said ALPHAVILLE is a group of artists, musicians and friends...they didnt talk about a band of 3 members.So is Alphaville not Alphaville anymore just because they don't live in a comune anymore?? For me it would't change a thing if Bernd left,Marian has been working alone in the tours anyway,and Martin helped him with the arrangements and versions.
And talking about POINT OF KNOW RETURN I don't think is a ricky song at all (one of my faves by the way).Just my opinion.

Then they two started their own band, which later become just Alphaville!
Through the years members have been coming and going (Frank & Rick), and now in "the end" we have Marian and Bernd again!

I know the story like that:

Bernd got to know Marian, but they did not talk about making music together. Then Frank asked Bernd if he wanted to make music. Bernd said yes, they made the FY ending theme with a keyboard. Bernd wanted to sing but then he remembered Marian and asked him if he wanted to join the band.

yes I also think that Marian and Bernd where the first to meet ... it goes back to 1979 in a flat in Berlin as Bernd sais ana as far as I know the first third member was Michael Lehnhoff and not Frank ... He played the Keyboards at the first ever live performance in the beginning ofr the 80s ...

In my opinion it was a great lost to the AV when Mertens, Echollete and Lloyd left the band... I heard the live cd Stark Naked and I think it is not the same AV without that three big guys I referred.

I think that there are songs that better left as demos - thats the beauty - the original stuff !
Take BIJ for example. The final version is the most perfect thing i've ever heard :) but you gotta admit that the demo on DS1 is pretty special... !

Let's not forget about the contribution Ricky made . He gave an organic feel to the band as a musician while Bernhard applied his trade as a synth guru. We should allow Alphaville to speak through their music now as they are no longer the same brand.
