I think the emotional engagement is as important as everything else. It´s hard to describe what is a good fan...
Just beeing here, at this forum, talking about them, and discussing them is just a perfect way of beeing a good and loyal fan.

I totally agree with Ariana... for example, if somebody isn't so rich and perhaps doesn't have afford to buy the albums, it still doesn't have to mean that that person isn't a fan... same with knowledge; you might like the music, but you aren't necessarily so eager to find out some useless fact about the band, it's the music that counts...so I voted for the last option.

Loving AV is a very emotional thing.
Look at me - i love them only 2.5 years and i dont have all the rare 80's singles, i cant make it to all their concerts cause i live very far (unlike fans from Germany or Scandinavia) BUT is that mean i dont love them more than anything ?

i fully agree with you..the emotions about the music is most important.
even if i only had BIJ and SLAM to listen to from tape in the beginning,i had a million feelings for the songs and million words to express my feelings about the music.

I think both sides of being an AV fan are important. The feeling is the strongest thing you can have. But how do you want to talk with other fans without having AV stuff? You would not know what they were talking about.

Anyway. I voted for the EMOTIONS.

I actually voted "recordcollector", because it all comes down to loving the music, and loving the music means get the music, either by buying, trading or whatever, but of course, it should be a combination and not everyone have had the luck to get most of it.

yeah... especially when everything has to special ordered on import. Which makes the price go upp with about 100-200skr.

And when you don´t have a credit card you can´t buy nothing on the internet.
It really sucks!!

First of all, a record collector may not even like AV's music - I happen to know a few of those.

With that said, I think the most important aspect is the emotional. If the music touches you, and you truly appreciate it, then you are a fan. All other things are secondary. If you have the means, you go get the music so you can listen to it more.

I happen to fall into the obsessive category - I am emotionally connected to AV, but I also try to collect any and everything associated with AV.

Actually, I didn't really vote because I think that a good fan is a some sort of combination of them all.

If you don't have a lot of records or can't join many concerts that doesn't mean that you a bad fan.
A good fan = someone who has that special feeling inside which makes heart beat faster everytime AV song is playing somewhere.

HOGWASH!! you cannot compare yourself with other people! You are as good a fan as any - but you are only as good a fan as you feel inside! So what if you don't have as much stuff as another fan!!! Just because I don't spend my money wisely trying to get rare singles or spend hours hunting for obscure mp3 files on the net doesn't make me any better or worse of a fan than you or anyone else on this forum!

No matter how good you are or how much stuff you collect, there will always be someone who comes along who has more stuff - you cannot compare yourself with others....

I know that I´m a good fan. And that is because I love AV by heart.
But I can´t help myself feeling a bit "bad" cause I don´t have The Dreamscapes box or Forever Pop.
It´s like there are certain things you need to own just to be able to call yourself a true fan.
You know like "how can you call yourself a fan when you don´t have that and that" and "how can you say you love them when you never attend their concerts".

Sometimes, as a fan, you can struggle with bad conscience, just `cause you can´t afford to buy the exclusive stuff and go to the gigs.

maybe a new album is on the way,so thats why i havent bought AP or FP..

But hey people. You can´t mean that you aren´t as good as someone else that likes AV, just because you haven´t this or that cd?! One thing is to know about a cd, and don´t care at all, then you maybe aren´t the best fan ever, but if you know that there is this cd, but you can´t afford it or get it, of course u will try to maybe download the songs instead!
I don´t have everything with AV, it´s very hard to collect everything with them incl all promos.

The reason our fandome/fanhood whatever you want to call it..is so great! Is because the band we are fans of are so great...They are in tune with their fans and care for them...Alphaville talks to their fans, not at them...Before all this web business I was an Alphaville fan but, I wasn't as BIG a fan then as I am now...and the reasoning isn't totally because their music got so much better (Though I think the music lately has been amazing) but it's because I've had the chance to talk to "The Greatest Bernhard" online and joke with him alot..and Mr. Gold gave me the pleasure to allow me to e-mail him a poem and actually took the time out to read it and answer me about how he felt about it...I have done this sort of thing with other bands and NEVER got the same respect from those bands as I do from Alphaville...All I can say is Thank You Alphaville!! For being such great guys and letting me be me with you!

I couldn´t agree more. It´s amazing how they care about their fans, and I think that´s the reason why AV fans are so loyal. We really feel that we are as importent for them as they are for us. It´s unique in many ways.

Never heard that one... actually. All I know is that there´s a "song", not actually a song in the real meaning of the word, but the first track on "Afternoons In Utopia" is called "IAO" which should stand for International Aquarian Opera. I´ve heard that AV had plans of doing a musical/opera of the "AIU" album, but they never could find the time, as we all know "AIU" is based on an opera/musical that they wrote around 1985, and the name of it would have been "International Aquarian Opera", that´s what I´ve heard.
