I think he just wishes she were dead so that the memory of her doesn't keep bugging him, as he realises it's too late. It's all a metaphor...

Think about it in real life terms - if you divorce or separate from someone, it's a lot harder to deal with than if they were dead. For one thing, they're still around; you may have to cross their path in everyday life, and the memory of what you had is always there to destroy you in someway. Whereas, if someone has died, it's easier to get over them in time, and you tend to remember the good times more than the bad.

Some months ago when I broke up with my girl I got a new view of this song....I always like the song and so...a great song and great lyrics.

But than the song got a new meaning for me....I could understand the pain that some could have when they lost some they love....just by break up or by dead.
