PHANTOMS

There's so many dreams undone
Lost forever more
Here we are just counting sheep
Eyes transfixed on monitors
We are sleeping strangely rapted
In shifting sands of irreality
I'ts [] to see

But what's behind that blinding light
All the
Pushing down in front us
A million everyday
And what are we supposed to do
Tell me everything
We'll be all right
All these sleeping sounds tonite

All the people walking by
Seem to need an answer
There's something missing
Don't know why
How the hell did we get here
But when I look around I understand
And everything comes clear to me
It's [] to see
Rising and falling with the tide

What you hear on the CD:

There's so many dreams undone
Lost forever more
Here we are just counting sheep
Eyes transfixed on monitors
We are sleepers strangely rapt
In shifting sands of irreality
And it's plain to see
But what's behind that blinding light

All the truths and all the lies pushing down upon us
A million choices everyday
What are we supposed to do
Tell me everything will be all right
And I'll be sleeping sound tonight

All the people walking by seem to need an answer
Something's missing, don't know why
How the hell did we get here?
But when I look around, I understand
And everything comes clear to me
It's plain to see
Rising and falling with the tide

...is not the same as it is in the booklet ;-)

Thank you Kaz ;)
Same exercice for the next one, I transcripted what I could :

HEAVEN ON EARTH
You know that love's the answer
The greatest drooling force
That carries you forever
Beyong the father God
Will we ever learn
Lessons of the world
Instead repeating History without a care
How much we heard
Sometimes it seems that we would never ever understand
The things we got to do
Dance like no-one is watching
Love like you'll never be hurt
The things we got to do
And sing like no one is listening
And live like it's your last day on Earth
The things we got to do
And nothing lasts forever
It does not seem it's cheap
It's only the beginning
Of something rather deep
We're trying to survive
We're always on the run
The sky is never blue
But the sun is long, long gone
A stranger at the corner
Pretending to be me
Could it really be

Kaz

You know that love's the answer; the greatest ruling force
That carries you forever beyond the farthest cause
Oh, will we ever learn the lessons of the world
Instead repeating history without a care how much we hurt
Sometimes it seems that we will never ever understand
The things we got to do

Dance like no-one is watching
Love like you'll never be hurt
The things we got to do
Sing like no-one is listening
And live like it's your last day on Earth
The things we got to do

If nothing lasts forever that doesn't mean it's cheap
It's only the beginning of something rather deep
We're trying to survive; we're always on the run
The sky's in ever blue but the sun is long, long gone
A stranger at the corner pretending to be me
Could it really be?

The chorus I know very well... [smile2]

The reason the song is called Heaven On Earth is because the original quote that the chorus comes from says, "Live like it's heaven on Earth" and not what it says in the song...

I am more confident with this one :

CALL ME

You know I've never been in love
Just read some books about it
You know I've never been with you before
But we can meet each other soon
To test some moments last in time ???
The touch of fading memories
So if you want me in your life
I swear I won't forsake you
And play this tune to own the food of life
For angels fear the threat

Just call me and I'll make it
I feel the black holes in your heart
Just call before you break it
Just call me and I'll make it
I've been around right from the start
Just call me and I'll take it

To keep it safe - To keep you safe
I'll keep you safe - Like ??

You know you're better than myself
I've been around for so long
Your posters hangin' on my wall, untouched
And all these bitches in your life
They make me sick and tired
I locked them up inside my mind, so deep
And now the time has come for you and me
To keep our promise
This is your lucky day
The hunter's captured by the game at last

Just call before we break it
Can feel the black holes in my heart
Just call me and I will take it
Just call me and we'll make it
You should have known we'll never part
Just call and don't forsake it
We'll never part - We'll never part

Just call me and I'll make it
I feel the black holes in your heart
Just call before you break it
Just call me and I'll make it
I've been around right from the start
Just call me and I'll take it

Oooh, I don't know who wrote the lyrics in the booklet but the spelling is terrible! And, again, what you hear on the CD is not exactly what's written in the booklet. I'm only looking now for the first time while doing this so I never noticed until now.

BTW Jetset, you've done a good job in listening! I suppose that's a testament to Marian's fairly clear diction :-)

SONG Für No1

I look into myself
There's nothing deep inside
There's an emptiness that I can't seem to hide
Were you enable to tell the words from the trees
So call me "stupid" if you please, because

This is a song for no one, but myself (x3)
Drifting slowly to the point of no return
Self-control and grace, is something I should learn
I lift my eyes up to that big wide sky
And leave me higher with some of mine

Blazing Queens now watching []
Johnny King on number's been fierce
Blazing Queens - []

Rouge for days, fantabulosza-sza!

Dilly Boys, so ferricadooza!

I thought blazé was pronounced with a short "a" sound, not a long one?

About Marian's diction, I was blown by Nostradamus - as I said back then in a post. Performing a song with old French lyrics, with such an accurate accent, is something difficult.
When he pronounces "Comme vingt mille lieues sous les mers", it is nearly perfect, of course the first "Comme" is more like "Côme" and "mers" like "męrs", stressed on the woyel, but he did work on the text, and the second whispered one is simply ok.

The hardest transcript was Tempelhoff - and I survived, so here we go :)

THE DEEP
Deep in myself I hear you like a distant sound
Deep in myself you muted from a secret distant star
Made of yearning and a sweet desire
Which I'll never tired of listening to
That gentle ocean's serve
Deep in myself you burried and locked an hidden treasure
Deep in myself within a chest filled up with weaver comforts
Which I'm keeping ???ly my jealous eyes
In glaring ambers and in raging heart
Deep in myself you're resting my coal heavy stone
Deep in myself that's drag on me onto the boat of my lake
I'm sinking fastly but I would never drown
And I've above me that gravest little cup of buzz??
I cross the sky who's tenderly and tiger lovers
Deep in myself
Deep in myself

:) Being a literature boffin, I looked into this a little bit. Song for No-One is probably my favourite new song from the album, and I hoped there would be more sense behind the mystery. Like all good literature, there is a wealth of possibilities.

There is definitely a tangent towards Polari here, or at least historical slang.

A 'blasé queen' is apparently an "up-market homosexual"; the term 'queen' is still used affectionately. A mauve voche would be a 'camp' or affected voice. 'Rouge for days', to my mind, is best left to the imagination *grins*.

'Joanie Kings' threw me a little bit. My best bet is that it is something to do with the old-style commercials with the Marilyn Munroe-esque ladies. One Joanie King was involved with an advertising campaign in the 1950s [anyone seen the TV show Mad Men (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mad_Men)? That is set in such a zone]. As such, sinister business as it was, 'numbers ben [good] fierce' sounds quite fitting to the first signs of cut-throat capitalism (as satirised so well by Arthur Miller, the one-time wife of Marilyn Munroe).

A 'billy-boy' is a naval term, referring to a ship. As 'ferricadooza' means a knock-down blow, we could have the language of shipwreck. If the advertising idea is anywhere near true, one option for 'Billy boys' might be 'Billing-boys', who would distribute flyers. How apt would a sly dig at one's promoters be? Harking back to the Polari strand, 'Billy' is a slang term for the devil, which has another deep-rooted comment about attitudes to homosexuality.

I love ambiguous and multi-faceted language. It's what keeps me going in my real-life occupation. I'm not sure if this is of any practical use, but thanks for reading if you chose to. x

Interesting explanations. I have to say that I did not know Polari before.
- Wiki says "dilly boy" stands for a male prostitute, so billy boy may be a variant.
- voches seems to be "voices".

Kaz
29 Nov 2010, 13:50
Cool explanation Keith! Thanks! I know a bit about the history of Polari as a code language for homosexuals in the days when homosexuality was still illegal in England and as a language used by actors and entertainers. And Kenneth Williams...oh, I say!

The Deep (hard even for me as a native English speaker to decipher!)

Deep in myself I hear you like a distant sound
Deep in myself emitted from a secret distant star
Made out of yearning and of sweet desire
Which I would never tire of listening to like gentle ocean surf
Deep in myself you're buried like a hidden treasure
Deep in myself within a chest filled up with withered comforts
On which I'm keeping ceaselessly my jealous eyes
In glaring embers and in raging ire
Deep in myself you're resting like a heavy stone
Deep in myself that's dragging me into the bottom of the lake
I'm sinking fast but I will never drown
And up above me I scry those little cockle boats
They cross the sky with tenderly entangled lovers
Deep in myself
Deep in myself

Thanks again Kaz ! Well, I give me a B+ for this one.
The theme is very similar to Indochine's song (Le Lac/The Lake), here is the video :
m3zEQ6ZKOYQ&

J'arrive au bord du lac,
j'aimerai bien que tu sois lŕ
C'est juste un endroit ŕ moi,
j'aimerai bien que tu le vois
Avant la nuit, j'irais au paradis
Aujourd'hui le jour est arrivé
Oů je vais tomber avec mes camarades
Comme des héros...
tout le monde saute
Comme un héros ...
vas-y saute
Tu veux me suivre...
Juste au milieu du lac
J'aime que tu sois avec moi
Toi au fond de la barque
J'ai le sang qui me glace
Pendant la nuit, on va au paradis
Je me sens bien ici
je me souviens de toi
Męme sous la mitraille
Comme des héros
Tout le monde saute
Comme un héros
Allez saute
Tu veux me suivre au fond du lac
Tu veux me suivre alors suis-moi
Comme des héros
Tout le monde saute
Comme un héros
Allez saute
Tu veux nous suivre au fond des lacs
Tu veux nous suivre alors suis-moi

Alright, scanning all the different Polari sites and dictionaries on the Web and cross-checking with various other languages this is what I have been able to figure out:

"Blazé queens, their voches so mauve":
[there is no translation for "blazé" anywhere to be found...it may be a misspelling of "blasé" which means "smug", but that's just speculation] greatest handmaids (handmaid means "sidekick" or "odd-job man" and may well have the sexual connotation KaM suggested), their [there is no translation for "voche" to be found anywhere...I very much doubt that it means "voice" because then "mauve" wouldn't make much sense] so mauve (which is the colour of a flower, somewhat pinkish).

"rouge for days, fantabulosza-sza!"
rouge (=makeup) for days, fantastic!

"joanie kings, all number ben fierce"
[no translation for "joanie" other than the name itself, of course, which does not make sense] greatest homies, all number [no English or Polari translation for "ben", but in French it's a colloquial form of "good", "quite", "pretty"] fierce.

"dilly boys, so ferricadooza"
male prostitutes, so slain.

Okay, so we have potentially smug excellent sidekicks with a pinkish something, it's really cool that there is makeup for days, there are some great homies with a woman's name (Joanie) and pretty wild number(s?), and killed male prostitutes.

Any suggestions for what this may actually mean?

14 Dec 2010, 21:38
- my guess for "blazé" is that it's only a variant for "blasé" (both spell the same in french and english), meaning "bored".
- "voche" is definitively voice, "mauve" meaning a mellifluous/mellow/smooth/suave/velvety voice.

Kaz
14 Dec 2010, 22:09
Mauve in English is a shade of purple and purple, in literary terms, usually means something overly extravagant, flowery or ornate. In that respect, it could refer to overly affected voices, as in overly effeminate or so.
