he he he Avil ... lucky you
where did all these song come from in ONE year ?!?
all the artists got inspired or something...
Hardin, you had Laura Branigan - Self control on your list. Ever heard the original Self control by R.A.F. Much cooler.....
yeah, I have the original R.A.F. version, both the 7" and 12" version, but I´ve always liked the Laura Branigan version better, it was also a bigger hit in 1984 than R.A.F.
Oh I remember 1984...
a chilly septemberday
I was 3hree years old and stood outdoor the record store and waited for the opening...
Alphaville, Forever Young, please!!
...hmmm, or maybe that was only a story
an another highlight in this year
Avil was born sweet kisses to you!

I probably got some kisses too... - from mommy and daddy as a 2 year old baby
By the way Hardin. The album "She´s so unusual" by Cyndi Lauper which contains "Girls just wanna have fun" and "Time after time" was already released in 1983. But it is by far Cyndi´s best album!
Yes...I´m proud of being as old as the FY-album...
Hardin...*kisses to U*
*I´m your best friend-the dream*
yes, but 1984 was the year that the songs entered the lists...
I mean A-ha - Take On Me was on the charts in 1985, but the song maybe was made in 1984.
It's difficult to exactly point when the songs was made, released or entered the charts. If the song were released in dec 1983... should I say it was a 1983 or 84 hit?
...oh it's much now,
hope my english is good enough...
oh... then I remind the "Goonies 'R' Good Enough" with Cyndi :)
You´re right Hardin, it´s a question of how you see it.
I think it was out 85...

I remember going to a concert the week after I got back from Japan, and saw Berlin, Huey Lewis and The Cars. I had just heard I want a new drug in japan, and that was just before it hit the airwaves...
Besides those 3....
Starship: We built this city
Stevie Ray Vaughan:Cold Shot, Couldn't stand the weather
Hall & Oates: Out of touch
Katrina & the waves-Walking on sunshine
Corey Hart-Sunglasses at night
John Waite-missing you
and too many my addled brain can't remember.
You see... that's the year I turned 21!
Sadly...I don´t remember much of this year...I wasn´t born until september huh.
*I´m your best friend-the dream*
Poul E...
I have figured out that
you and I have almost exactly the same musictaste.
Pure, soft, melodic 80's songs :)
Thank You for the song
China Crisis: Wishful thinking
I haven't heard that before... It's so fantastic!
Thank God for Napster... ooops! :)
And thank you once again for the MiniDisc.
M. Härdin
Dident A-HA`s Take on me flopp in 83.
But rereleased with a new video in 85?????.
The video to Take on me wasn´t that good...
*I´m your best friend-the dream*
But Avil... *I'm shocked*
The video is one of the coolest 80's videos.
http://www.soderhamn-net.com/~u00313ma/aha.gif
I like drawings... this video is a masterwork of drawings
Hardin, you´re right we have nearly the same taste in music. Maybe we should exchange "discographies" so we could see exactly how close our taste in music is?!
But hardin!!*lol*
I just didn´t think it was so cool like everyone says. Boring video.
*I´m your best friend-the dream*
Sten. "Take on me" was originally released in 1984, but it flopped. Only 300 copies were sold (I have 2 of them). But when it was released again accompanied by a fantastic video (Avil) it had a totally different outcome. That video is for me the best musicvideo ever!
In 1984 Alphaville get awarded with two "Rockbjörnen"
by the biggest swedish newspaper "Aftonbladet" !!
:) The Best foreign band = Alphaville
:) The Best foreign album = Forever Young
http://www.soderhamn-net.com/~u00313ma/rockbjornen.gif
Hey, wait a minute...
have I miss something here???
Is there's another (better?) version of the "take on me video" ?
Hardin..you missed:
Best newcomer and
best song
*I´m your best friend-the dream*
poul e - I would say it was the best video for it's time. Not the best of all time.
There is a different version of "Take On Me" video I seen about a month ago on a webpage...I will have to find that again, I wouldn't say it was better though...
Cruising in cocktails...
Trent
Major, for me it´s the best ever. Which one is your favourite?
poul e - Dire Straits' Brothers In Arms
trent - is this new video by A-Ha. There is some other band that did a cover a while back
No, this is a-ha, I know what Morten Harket looks like and it was definately Morten Harket and no one can do "Take On Me" like Morten Harket does
Cruising in cocktails...
Trent
Hers some random facts about Take on me.
It was released tree times before it became the big hit it was.
Toped the US Billboard in 85.
And made it to number 2 in the UK, the same year.
The final version of the video, is by MTV rank as the 34 best video ever, and by VH1 the 3 best ever.
If there is a cover out there it is done by a band called Reel Big Fish.

There was another cover version of ''Take On Me'' recently by an awful boy band called ''A1'' i think it got to number 1 here in England, not sure if it done anything else around the world,if you like the A-ha version then you'll despise this.
My fave year is aso 1984 by the way, there was some incredible albums released that yea.Ive just had a little rummage thru my record collection and picked out my 20 fave albums from that year,id say the first ten are pretty much in order and 11-20 are subject to change:-
1.DEPECHE MODE - SOME GREAT REWARD
2.SPARKS - PULLING RABBITS OPUT OF A HAT
3.ROGER WATERS - PROS AND CONS OF HITCH-HIKING
4.ALPHAVILLE - FOREVER YOUNG
5.ART OF MOISE - WHOS AFRAID
6.SMITHS - MEAT IS MURDER
7.HOWARD JONES - HUMANS LIB
8.NIK KERSHAW - HUMAN RACING
9.FAD GADGET - GAG
10.MARILLION - MISPLACED CHILDHOOD
11.OMD - JUNK CULTURE
12.PHIL OAKEY and GIORGIO MORODER - PHIL OAKEY and GIORGIO MORODER
13.R.E.M. - RECKONING
14.FRANKIE GOES TO HOLYWOOD - WELCOME TO THE PLEASUREDOME
15.JEAN MICHEL JARRE - ZOOLOOK
16.PSYCHEDELIC FURS - MIRROR MOVES
17.GARY NUMAN - BERSERKER
18.QUEEN - THE WORKS
19.MIKE OLDFIELD - DISCOVERY
20.BLANCMANGE - MANGE TOUT
Many of these albums are arguably each of the artists finest, especially Art Of Noise as they seemed to lose all their innovation after they left ZTT.Of course the year after wasnt too shabby either with albums like Kate Bush's Hounds Of Love,A-ha's Hunting High and Low,Propaganda's A Secret Wish and an impossible to forget stunning debut by the Pet Shop Boys but thats a different topic.
Stu
I see many people seem to have a similar music taste as I, but mostly Poul e and Hardin. Man, 1984 was DEFINATELY the best year in the history of music, along with the magical 1983... and almost all of my faves from -84 were mentioned here already...
..I'm not so sure if all these are from -84, but correct me if I make a mistake;
OMD - Enola Gay
Sandra - In the Heat of the Night
Erasure - Who Needs Love Like That?
A-ha - The Sun Always Shines On T.V
..and, heck, I can't think of any others...*damn*, and, If this list is full of flaws (like wrong years), observate that I wasn't born until -86 ...
"the 80's child"
Oh Micki
Enola Gay (1980)
Sun always shines on TV (1985)
Who needs love like that (1985)
I´m not sure about "In the heat of the night", but I think it´s from 1985.
But all of them are great songs!!
About songs from 1984 - I think about 20 songs on my personal "all-time-favourites" top 100 chart are from 1984 and a couple of them surely in top 10. It really was a great musical year!!!
http://www.virtue.nu/wii/Poul_E.gif
I KNEW IT!!!*hehe*...well...I just had to try to come up with a few songs that weren't listed here already...but, what I DO know is that "the Sun Always Shines On T.V" was released -84, at least somewhere, otherwise it must have been a type-o on my "SASONT.V"-single...
"the 80's child"
"The Sun Always Shines On T.V." was released the 16th December 1985
"When I close my eyes, I see my soul...When I open them, I see yours"...
Trent
...and, oops, did I write "In the Heat of The Night"? I was supposed to write "Maria Magdalena", but I just remembered that it's an -85 too, so forget it...but don't worry, I'm just a bit tired today...*hehe*
"the 80's child"
Micki if you have a copy of Sun always shines on TV from 1984 it certainly is very rare!!
Take on me (A-ha´s first single) was released in Scandinavia for the first time in 1984, but it only sold about 3000 copies (I have one of those on 12" by the way). But when it was re-released in 1985 with a certain cartoonmusicvideo the story was quite different!
So for your single to be from 1984 it has to be a printing error or perhaps some kind of promo. I´d really like to see a scan of it!!
http://www.virtue.nu/wii/Poul_E.gif
I don't have a scanner ...

The Eurodance group Captain Jack did a pretty good cover of Take on Me a few years ago...... maybe a little faster with a woman singer.

I couldn't agree more....just look at the amount of hits from that period which have been covered since!
I would say 1983 to 1986 is the best period.
agree with you willy... the golden era begin '83, peaked '84, fading out to '86...
I also agree with you Willy....and at the same time agree with Trond that 1984 and 1985 were the best years!!

I have to say 80-86. Lot's of good stuff from 80-83. Ultravox, Visage, Duran Duran, Human League and the early Kim Wilde stuff is best.
That´s why our 80-parties in Norway only contains music from 81-86, and mostly from 84-85 [smile] [smile]
After 86, nothing !!
for me the "golden era" is between 83-86, when the synths sounds best.
but it stared already in the middle of 70's with kraftwerk, jarre...
then later ultravox, visage, soft cell, depeche mode and rational youth.
It is not just the music...
The best memories is from that period also...
It was then you "ruled" the dancefloor [bigmouth]
I ruled the dancefloor in my mother's stomach :D
/Christina
Yes Trond....a lot of things were better back then! It's funny that you say we ruled the dancefloor....actually myself and a couple of friends danced like crazy so we occupied a huge part of the dancefloors we visited....that was really funny....but I don't think I'll ever do that again....
The mid-80s were a fabulous time for music. I'm no longer the youngest staff member (the new secretary is 2 years younger than me) but the other English teachers love music from the 60s- early 70s .... while the Germans mostly go for Deutsch-Schlager (no comment [wink]) .... I wish some of you were at my school .... I'm always alone in wanting 80s music at parties and dances!
My brother emailed me an article recently saying how my favourite old dance-club burned down! Even though they closed after I left the US, still that's sad. Anyway I was too young to be tearing up the dancefloor in '84... I was more tearing up my bedroom floor, the living room, the backyard, the kitchen ..... driving my parents crazy by singing along with all the songs I heard on the radio. Now I just drive my fiancé crazy, singing along with everything :D .

I am getting serious flashbacks with all these music hits. Did the Police have some hits from Synchronicity in 1984? I can not remember. LOL
You guys are awesome in remembering/sourcing this information. Thanks from us old guys.

A little something you ought to know before you read my list is that I'm a man of many moods. I could be listening to AV one day and something harder the next, so you may be surprised with my list.
Singles and Albums from '84 that I liked.
AV: FY
Ultravox: Lament
Van Halen: 1984
Judas Priest: Defenders of the Faith with "Rock Hard Ride Free"
W.A.S.P.: (Untitled first album) as well as "Animal (F*** Like a Beast)"

Sammy Hagar: V.O.A., the one with "I Can't Drive 55"
Time Zone: "World Destruction"
Scorpions: Love at First Sting with "Rock You Like a Hurricane"
The one thing I didn't like about '84: We used to have a radio station that played lots of alternative bands, KYYX. Just as we were all getting into it, they pulled it off the air! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
I loved Judas Priest and Van Halen myself.
It´s great to play rock´n´roll loud now an then.
Don't forget Iron Maiden's "Powerslave" (containing "2 Minutes To Midnight" and the fabulous "Rime of
the ancient Mariner") - a milestone full of Egyptism, just like the following tour, which started in Poland btw.
and has brought millions of people to...illumination...[smile2]
Very nice to dive back into that time by the current "Live After Death"-DVD...

Some of those songs seem like they're either before or after the year. Are you going by when they came out as singles?
I think Marillion had an album in '84 as well. Fugazi. "Punch and Judy" was a good one, but given the choice of singers, I prefer the later Steve Hogarth era over the early years with Fish.
@trond: glad you like it, actually I don't like Weather Girls either, but it's still a classic tune from '84 :-)... also "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" is not a favourite track.
@foolship: well... I have try to make the list when the songs was first released or entred the charts... it's sometimes hard to decide if it's an 83, 84 or 85 tune.
A-Ha - Take On Me for example... it was first released 84 but was later reproduced 85 and became a hit.
thanks for the Marillion input :-)
@trond: glad you like it, actually I don't like Weather Girls either, but it's still a classic tune from '84 :-)... also "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" is not a favourite track.
Oukei! So the list is not necessary your favourits.
But anyhow, It´s raining men should be removed [bigmouth]
Wake me up before you go go, well... I think I can handle that song.
You have a lot of italo and beat box on your list. Love it !![wink]
The Twins - Love System
The Twins - Not The Loving Kind
Thompson Twins - Doctor!Doctor!
Yes, both Twins and Thompson Twins on the same list [smile2]
I've got all the albums from the German duo Twins and the first four albums are absolutely fantastic!
And as for Thompson Twins, well my name babble is in honour of one of the greatest bands of the 80s (Tom and Alannah of Thompson Twins fame called themselves Babble for two albums after they put Thompson Twins to rest in the 90s).
yes, and this is not a permanent list... just collecting tunes made in '84... own favorites mixed with "classics".
yes, The Twins first albums is one of my favorite albums of the 80's

I do remember that in '84, my mother went to see Rod Stewart live, during his Camouflage tour. So, if it's singles you're looking for, how about either:
