Unfortunately a lot of the bands which I like the best don´t exist any longer (Hooters (maybe they will come back), Queen, DeFilm). Another, and one of my absolute favourites besides Alphaville is OMD. They have made so many classic pop songs without ever becoming really big (any parallels to Alphaville?). Songs include "Joan of Arc - Maid of Orleans", "Enola gay", "If you leave", "So in love", "Tesla girls", "Pandoras Box" and "Call my name".
In my opinion (unfortunately) I believe that if OMD and Alphaville have had the looks and management that Take That, Backstreet Boys etc has had then they would have been just as big (or even bigger).

What do you think?

Alphaville - forever young
OMD - talking loud and clear

I always liked OMD - listened to the entire Sugar Tax album today - great tracks all the way throughout the album.

Is there a solo album coming up with the singer ? I´ve read about that somewhere.

Sugar Tax is a "solo act" as are "Universal" and "Liberator" because OMD split up some time after "The Pacific Age" (1986). Andy McCluskey went solo and kept the OMD name. A couple of years ago the word was that he stopped so I guess we will never get a new OMD album? But Paul Humphreys has helped on some OMD tracks since they split up and he is now working together with Claudia Brücken (Propaganda) on a new album. That´s what I heard.

A couple of months ago "The OMD Peel Sessions" was released and next year the record company will release an OMD "B-sides album" so they still want to earn some money on OMD! I haven´t got the "Peel Sessions" album as it is very hard to get here in Denmark, but hopefully sometime in the future I will?!

Yes SUGAR TAX is my favorite and LIBERATOR is great !!!
The name of my club (discotheque) was LIBERATOR !!!
It was a great experience......

It's a shame that great bands such as Alphaville or Camouflage are quite anonymous
whereas popular boys groups (e.g. backstreet
boys) with poor music abilities, take over.

Let me show you the world

OMD is my 2nd favourite band - besides Alphaville.

But why does everybody seem to like Sugar Tax?? It´s in my eyes one of the worst albums! I prefer the early stuff. My favourite albums are Architecture & Morality, Crush and Junk Culture. As you can see, I liked their music much better, before they split up in the late 80s. Just the last album Universal was a very fine piece of work again.

Concerning the rumours of a solo album of Andy McCluskey... I guess you´ve heard of the girl group, he is producing and writing songs for now, together with Stewart Kershaw. They released their first album in the end of 2000.

Roland K.: The girl band you are talking about is Atomic Kitten. I have heard a couple of their songs and I´m not impressed.

My second favourite OMD album is "Junk Culture" then "Pacific Age", "Architecture and morality" and "Liberator".

Yes, that´s true.

I own the album and it is far from being good. It´s music, you can listen to "besides". A typical girl-band.
There are two songs on it, which are good. That´s all. So you don´t miss much, when you don´t own this album.

Hi Willy!
What I know is, that Andy McCluskey and Stewart Kershaw are already writing on new songs for their girl-band Atomic Kitten.
It seems as if they had enough success, to continue with this project. They had 3 Top 10 singles in the UK and obviously they do have many fans in Asia.
So I wouldn´t count on any solo projects of Andy in the near future.

The only good news concerning OMD is, that there might be a release of a B-side-album in this year.

Just as an information:

The girl-band "Atomic Kitten", which Andy McCluskey is producing since the end of OMD, is the current No. 1 in the UK charts with their song "Whole again". This is already the 5th single off of their debut album.

He never was No. 1 was OMD in the UK, but now he finally made it.

I love OMD as well. My fav album though is their last The Universal. I love songs like Victory Waltz. It was so upsetting to learn that they're now just writing tunes for a girl band. I think OMD was highly underestimated and ignored...then again I feel the same way for Alphaville in North America too...

Tara
...it's too bad..

OMD are also one of my favourite groups. They have done many great songs for example:
- Pandora´s box
- Call my name
- Dreaming
- Dollar girl
- Speed of light
- Walk tall
- Walking on the milky way
- The moon & the sun
- Goddess of love
- Stay
- The romance of the telescope
- The lights are going out

I must say that I like the three last (or hopefully latest) better than the things they did when Paul Humpreys also was in the band.

You might know that Andy McCluskey (the main singer and writer) unfortunately nowadays write songs for a girl band, called "Atomic kitten" instead of for OMD. I heard 1/3 of such a song two days ago on MTV and it didn´t sound either good or bad. Have anyone of you heard it and what do you think about it?

OMD is GREAT! I have to say that I like their old stuff better - electricity, enola gay, if you leave, so in love, talking loud and clear, secrets....... all the early singles!!! GREAT stuff!!

I totally agree with you, Avil. Maid of Orleans is one of my all time favourites. I loved it from the begin, when I heard it the first time in 1982. Wow, that´s 20 years now! :)
It contains everything: a mysterious intro, a fantastic melody, the strong voice of Andy McCluskey plus the wonderful drums.
It´s a real masterpiece!

10 Jan 2002, 11:35
Micki: Yes I have heard the Sash Mix of Enola Gay. It actually is pretty good. I wasn´t sure what I should think when I heard that OMD and Sash we´re going to do a new version of the classic Enola gay. But it turned out pretty good. I like the "news rap" with a lot of facts behind the whole story of Enola Gay!

Maid of Orleans is one of OMD´s better tunes. And it´s pretty hard to understand that it has been more than 20 years since I sneeked into my bigbrothers room when he wasn´t home and put on "Architecture and Morality"!!

OMD were fantastic, especially the first four albums:-
OMD
Organisation
Architecture and Morality
and Dazzle Ships

Im afraid i didnt like the Sash version of Enola Gay,it just seemed to cheapen it in my opinion, but thats just my view.

OK so to help you all with the rumours of Paul Humphreys,he is in fact working with Claudia Brucken of Propaganda fame, they are husband and wife and a friend of mine is working on the album also!!
He sent some demos of his own stuff to Paul Hunphreys a while ago and Paul like them and got in touch and my friend is now working with them,if all goes according to plan the album should be out this year,i'll provide more info when i can,at present tho it may be released under Claudia's name.

I love OMD, but I agree with Andreas - the last 3 albums were the best. In fact The Universal was AMAZING and I thought it was sad that he stopped doing OMD at a time where he was reaching perfection to do "Atomic Kittens" bleh..

I just LOVED The Universal..

Tara :)

rolandk
18 Jan 2002, 09:31
Personally I like the old albums more, but Universal is a wonderful album and one of the best OMD albums ever.
I guess, Andy stopped OMD at this time, because he was highly frustrated. In an interview he once said, that "Walking on the milky way" is one of the best songs he ever wrote - but still it became no hit. OMD were hardly played anymore on the radio. He said, that if the same song had been performed be a teen band, it would have been a hit.
So he formed Atomic Kitten just to show, that he still can write hits. And he can, as we can see with the success of the Kittens. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
You can be sure, that e.g. "Whole again" would have been just a minor hit, if it had been recorded by OMD.
It is a pity.... but that´s how it is.

poul e
18 Jan 2002, 10:22
I agree with your views totally Roland! It´s really sad, but that´s just the way it is!
"Whole again" is a really good song, but it would never be that big a hit if the name on the CD was OMD (or Alphaville for that matter). <img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle>

http://www.virtue.nu/wii/Poul_E.gif

rolandk
18 Jan 2002, 11:21
Yes, it´s sad, that it´s not the music, which is counting.

On the other hand it is so, that Andy now earns more money in one year with the Kittens than in 20 years with OMD - and with half the work.
He can stay in the background and doesn´t have to do the promotion. I guess, that´s quite okay. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
The question is, if it is satisfying for him.
I believe, that he will sooner or later start to form a new band or maybe there will be a re-union of OMD with Paul Humphreys.
The success now will give him the financial freedom, to produce much better music in the future, which is not just chart orientated.

micki
21 Jan 2002, 16:56

Funny that this topic went silent right after we had discussed Atomic Kitten and the song "Whole again".....OMD are reunited and the first song that's being released is....WHOLE AGAIN. It will festure on the tribute album “Covers and Collaborations – The Number Ones Album” which will be released February 4th 2008. You can learn more about this project - which also include a concert on January 19th - here http://www.thenumberoneproject.org/index.php?pid=home

You can listen to "Whole again" here: http://www.omd.uk.com/html/downloads.html

You can then decide for yourself which version is better....the one by Atomic Kitten or the one by OMD. My choice is clear....this song is the best new song I've heard for ages by any artist!!

russharvey

08 Jan 2008, 20:07
You are so right, Poul. This cover-version (well, can we call it a "cover" at all?) is so much better than the "original". Can´t stop listening to it, since I discovered it last week.

I hope, I can get the album as soon as it is released. Seems like there could be some interesting songs on it.

But it really is funny, that the OMD topic started again, where the discussion ended almost 6 years ago.

Now all I want is a NEW OMD album! Can´t await to hear new stuff!

I heard OMD (the orginal lineup) in concert last June .... it was an amazing experience, comparing with my first AV-concert in 1999. I heard Paul Humphries alone with band at a synth-show in 2000, and it was pretty good, so I wasn't expecting anything spectacular at this last concert but thought it would be fun. And how wrong I was. They were BRILLIANT. Still scintillating synths, clear singing - it all had that magic touch you don't often get in synth-concerts. They played all of their hits as well as a lot of music from "Architecture and Morality" - I got several new fave OMD songs as a result. Their attitude was really refreshing, didn't take themselves too seriously, just laughed and had a good time. The songs Architecture and Morality and The Beginning and the End - wonderful! My only complaint was that it was too short - I could have danced all night. It was a warm summer evening, outdoor concert - perfect atmposphere. If any of you have the opportunity, don't miss it. I hope they come to Berlin again ... and can't wait for the new album!

I received the remastered version of Dazzle Ships on Monday. It's really amazing how well it has aged. The original "Manor version" of Telegraph is fantastic! And we finally get to hear the full-length version of 66 And Fading on CD. Great stuff!!! [smile]

I finally got mine last saturday, signed by Andy McCluskey.[smile]
The remastering is really well done and one can buy it just because of the bonus-tracks.

The "Manor version" is outstandig and now we also get the 12" of Telegraph and Genetic Engineering on CD. It took me ages, to find the Telegraph 12" on vinyl. Obviously nobody bought it back then.

I still remember, when I first listened to Dazzle ships, more than 20 years ago. It totally confused me, because it sounded so weird. Some of the songs I liked immediately, but all these sound experiments and radio/telephone stuff...??? Was that my OMD?

But after years of listening to it, I got more and more into this record and it means a lot to me now.

"4-Neu" is one of my favourite OMD b-sides (okay, a song dedicated to "Neu" can´t be bad) and now we get the unedited "66 and fading" on CD. That was about time!!!

I got the LIVE DVD today! So great to finally have a live recording by OMD in good quality!! Most of their best songs are included on the DVD although there could be more from Andy's "solo OMD period". But all in all a great DVD with fantastic sound!
Andy MacCluskey looks almost the same as he did 20 years ago, but the rest of the band looks like they've aged more than him. He is also very energetic on stage and he sings really well. I think he is probably more a "leading figure" of the band now than he was 20 years ago.

OMD announce the release of their 30 year anniversary CD+DVD Greatest hits. The news is taken from their official website www.omd.uk.com (http://www.omd.uk.com)

More details on the forthcoming new OMD compilation: Messages – OMD Greatest Hits 30 Years In Sight & Sound (CDVX 3050) will be a combination of CD and DVD. The package will be released on 29nd September 2008. A digital download will also be made available via some outlets.

I think, OMD is a good band. They recorded great songs and they still remember me time when I was a very small child. Together with father & mother & with their friends we were on a big bike-trip to "Baltyk" sea. It was 800 km from us house. Father had a red walkman, and all the time I was hearing OMD, alphaville and another great songs! We was traveling between the forests, beautiful meadows, lakes and we were sleeping in tents. I remeber that like time of full free :). So In Love, Maid Of Orleans... Ahhh.... It was so fresh and clear.. Today I found more their tracks, and I must to tell: "That it's great too!" Dynamic Electricty, great Almost, and another points from Poul e's list.

A new "snippet" is now out on their official website. I must admit I am looking more and more forward to this album. I think the new Alphaville album will have to be REALLY great to better than the new OMD album "History of modern" with all the classic synth. The melody to "Sister Marie says" was written back in 1981 and the lyrics in 1993...they call it "the lost brother of Enola Gay".
It's no doubt going to be a fantastic album!!!!

It's now possible to listen to the entire album at OMD's My Space page. Like more or less promised in the title "History of modern" it's a mix of 80s and 2010 sounds. There's some classic OMD tracks and some very 2010ish songs. There's some songs for those who like the experimental OMD the most and there's even a song with Yazoo-like synth (Green)!!! Green is also one of the better songs on an album that needs to be listened to a couple of times for it to grow. My favourite song so far is by quite some distance "Sister Marie says" which is a fantastic song with early 80s sound!

Poul E, I would join you in London or Berlin, if you want to see them live, I'm sure more people would join us.

Btw, the new album is excellent, this is among the best OMD has ever done, I can't stop listening to "History of Modern (Part I)".....perfect, just perfect....[headpho]

Yes I agree Willy....History of modern (part 1) is fantastic!!! After listening only a couple of times to the songs I have to say that this song is my favourite. A fantastic mix of old and new sound that really works!!!

I have been thinking about joining the concert in Hamburg, but I haven't yet decided...

There are 6 really great songs on the album and the rest will take some time to like I think. The 6 are "History of modern - parts 1 and 2", "If you want it", "Sister Marie says", "Green" and "RFWK"

No [smile2]

But for fans it's great! Besides the actual CD you get the double lp, a t-shirt, a bonus disc of demos, a DVD and some extra artwork!

After listening to the small parts from the upcoming Alphaville album I find it hard to believe that the AV album will be better than this fantastic album from OMD....but we will have to wait and see....

I just can't get tired of the fantastic "History of modern" album from OMD!! I have to say that for me it's better than "Catching rays on giant". The Alphaville album is probably better to listen to for the first time but unlike most other Alphaville albums there are some songs that I grow a bit tired of. That is not the case with the OMD album...

The third single of the album (History of modern part 1) is accompanied by a fantastic video and an even more fantastic extended version (OMD's extended version). Oh how I've missed those great remixes.....so few makes great remixes today!!!
