I just have to say that I like Van Halen,
as the only "hard rock" band I listen to.

Songs like "Jump", "Dreams", "Right Now" etc.

1984 was a great year in music, many of the best songs from 80s were released that year. I was 14 at the time, but even then I loved music more than anything else...just like today.

hehe..... these guys have some early pearls like Girl... you really got me.... songs before they hit it absolutely HUGE in 84. Of course, Eddie van Halen has to be one of the top guitar players of the 80's..... rumor has it that they may come back with Roth at the microphone again.......

How did I not notice this one before???

Van Halen has been my all-time favorite for as long as I can remember, regardless who's singing, just as long as the music kicks axx!

Say what you will about Sammy Hagar's stay in the band, I consider 5150 to be my favorite album of theirs. "Dreams" is perhaps the best flippin' song they ever had!

For the Roth era, their second album and Diver Down are the two greatest, IMO. Most of the Roth albums are just plain fun, and these two top the list.

The Gary Cherone era (VH III, '98) was short-lived, indeed, but I did like one song out of the bunch. "Once."

This topic should be completed with Van Halen in its title please!

Well, hardly someone around who knows me will be surprised that VH always played a special role
in my life. As for their undisputable musically revolutionary era, it's certainly been the early Roth
one, VH II is my favourite.
Since I personally am a guy who cannot separate a voice and the personality behind of it from music that
contains such, I definitely prefered the time with Sammy Hagar.
Although there always has been weak moments on every album, I found the combination of his
partially saucy lyrics and voice to the partially cheesy background vocals featuring Michael Antony,
the perfect rhythm-telepathy between the VH-brothers and Eddie's soulful playing, which never has
been just wanking (sorry!), as we call those virtosic million-notes-per-minute-without-saying-anything-
musicians here..., extremely inspireing and extraordinary.

So OU812 and specially Balance mean a lot to me. I think those show best VH's attitude and much
of Sammy's inner life...

VH III is still quite unlistenable to me.

I'm glad Sammy and Michael still play together. It is a shame what Eddie has become. Just yt a bit
and you'll learn more about the thin line between genius and insanity - or what else drugs and alcohol
can destroy if you cannot handle your talent, fame, money and success.

You all hear about THIS?

Yep! A tour for 2012 AND their first studio album in...forever (okay, 1998).

Should be interesting. With Roth back in the lineup, and Eddie's son Wolfgang on bass...

(Michael Anthony had either left or was fired some time ago, and is currently with Hagar's band Chickenfoot.)

Okay, so I bought the CD/DVD combo version of the new VH CD, "A Different Kind of Truth," just last night, and listened to it a couple of times.

I think those of you who are curious might enjoy a good bit of it.

With Dave back in the lineup, the band pretty much goes back to its "roots." The only big difference is the change of bassists, with Eddie's son Wolfgang in place of Michael Anthony (now with Sammy Hagar's Chickenfoot).

As for the songs, they go every which direction in styles. The "Tattoo" song is pretty good, but they also do a few hard, fast songs, as well as a take on the R&B genre with "Stay Frosty." That one has a bit of the sense of humor that Dave is known to throw around as well.

Since I've only heard the album twice so far, it's tough to really rate it on a 10-scale, but I would go so far as to give it somewhere around...

8/10

Malila, if you're still curious, you might be able to hear some samples on Amazon or iTunes by now.

Incidentally, I still have yet to try the DVD. They say it has a few of the older songs redone, so it should be interesting.
