I agree with davidhorizon in saying that "The Chauffeur" is certainly the very best song by Duran Duran : everytime I listen to it ,it makes me dream!

Ah. A believer! Everyone else: Put your headphones on, close your eyes and listen to "The chauffeur" I think you will understand us.

And watching lovers part, I feel you smiling
What glass splinters lie so deep in your mind
To tear out from your eyes
With a word to stiffen brooding lies
But I'll only watch you leave me further behind

Along with the Chauffeur as best Duran song I'd have to add in Secret Oktober. I absolutely love that song. It's the b-flip to Union of the Snake.

Tara : )
...I have yet to be told what a union of a snake is..hehe...

Sorry to say so but the best DD song.
Ordinary World, performed by Aurora.

davidhorizon
05 Feb 2001, 23:48
Yeah "Secret october" is really good. Defently their best b-side.

Bottomline is: Duran Duran makes great soft ballads. "The chauffeur", "Save a prayer", "The 7th stranger", "Ordinary world", "Come undone", "Secret october" and many others... Forget about "wild boys" and "The reflex". This is where their power is.

Avihai
05 Feb 2001, 23:55
They do make great ballads BUT they are also super where it comes to the beats :
Wild Boys,Rio,Hungry...,Planet Earth,Girls on film,Reflex,Union of,A view...
Those are phantastic !

I would add to the list above also Simon LeBon's solo works,such as "Grey Lady of the Sea","Dreamboyz"and "Follow in my Footsteps".

davidhorizon

Yeah "Grey Lady of the Sea" is great. I downloaded it from the internet a couple of years back. When i heard it for the first time in like 15 years, it actually brought a tear to my eye.

I love all Duran Duran songs and ,although I am only 16,I am expert about them enough to recommend,to those who think the way davidhorizon does,also the following songs:
"To the Shore",from the first DD album;
"Lady Ice",from the side project Arcadia's album"So Red the Rose";
"Winter Marches On",from"Notorious";
"Palomino" and "The Edge of America",from "Big Thing";
"My Antarctica",from "Liberty";
"Drive By"(which is a sort of prequel to "The Chauffeur"),from "Thank You";
"Out of My Mind" and "Midnight Sun",from"Medazzaland";
"Lady Xanax",from"Pop Trash".
Among the tracks belonging to the rock-dance side of DD,I prefer :
"Late Bar",the b-side to "Planet Earth";
"My Own Way",from "Rio";
"Vertigo(Do the Demolition)",from"Notorious";
"DownTown",from"Liberty";
"The Sin of the City",from"The Wedding Album";
"So Long Suicide",from "Medazzaland";
"Mars meets Venus",from"Pop Trash".

The speculation is over!

The original Duran Duran is reuniting!!!
After 15 years all the original members are reuniting. This means Roger Taylor and Andy Taylor that left in 1986, and John Taylor who left in 1997. The last release from the original DD was "A view to a kill" in 1985.

DD is currently a trio with Simon Le bon, Nich Rhodes and Warren Cuccurullo. Warren who is not an original member, will leave the band after their current tour.

You can read it at cnn.dk and duranduran.com

There has been nothing said about them stopping after this album. If anythign I want ARCADIA back!!! (gothic incarnation of Duran)

You see, here I go again:

I am NOT HAPPY that they are getting back together. Why go back to hell? You get rid of Andy Taylor cause they don't get along and they go and bring him back? John wanted to do his own stuff and now he's cominmg back? Why? I liked Warren. I liked the new Duran. I don't want more Rio and the reflex. Those are OLD DATED songs. I like evolution. I think that most of Duran's stuff AFTER the "big years" blows away Rio and Seven and the Ragged Tiger.

But most people don't listen to the new stuff of bands that had the spotlight in the 80's (DM, U2. Duran) So the new stuff is not given a chance. Medazzaland is a great album - but you have to give it time.

Plus, we attach memories to certain albums. This is why newer albums don't go over as well with people. It's cause people remember the times they had when the older albums came out and it brings good memories. With the new ones, there isn't that memory attachment. So people shrug new stuff off. I grab that new stuff and create memories with it. Same thing - how can say Rio be better than Duran's 1993 wedding album or Medazzaland? How can DM's Some Great Reward be better than Exciter (oh god no, it BLOWS it away!) I don't know.. Maybe I'm odd.

Tara ..getting back together..this is Duran's death kiss... :(

davidhorizon
15 May 2001, 04:04
Its funny you mention Arcadia. I love Arcadia. The album "So red the rose" is actually better than all of Duran Durans albums. They deserve a topic of their own!

I do love Rio and the first album. But you're right, they have made great albums without Andy and Roger. Dont forget "Notorious"!!!. However I think DD is currently stuck. Simon, Nick and Warren have worked to long together. They are running out of ideas. They need some outside influence, and I think the reunion will give DD the right injection of inspiration.

It's great that Duran Duran have decided to reunite.I 'd like to hear from them an album which mixes together all the best they have done in the past years : The dark synths and electronic rhythmes of their first album ;The exotic and crystalline melody lines of "Rio" ;the infectious choruses of "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" ;the live power of "Arena";the evocative and sophisticated oriental-jazz-ambient atmospheres of the Arcadia period;the melodramatic hymn-like verses and dance-funk structure of the tracks that constitute "Notorious";The pop-art style of construction of the songs of "Big Thing";the catchy guitar/synth riffs contained in "Liberty";the new fresh inspiration which generated the mature masterpiece "The Wedding Album";The arrangements'ability shown on "Thank You";the original ideas of the kaleidoscopic "Medazzaland";the acoustic and orchestral vein of "Pop Trash".

I just can't get excited about Duran Duran getting back together. I don't like most of their songs.... they seem a bit trite to me. I didn't like Arcadia or Power Station either. I do like the music for Rio and Hungry Like the Wolf and I think my all time favorite DD song is Come Undone. However, I don't believe that anything worthwhile will come of this reunion. I saw these guys perform live in Portland Oregon about four years ago and they were horrible!

I will reserve all judgement until I hear the new stuff, but my hopes are not high here.

at the time Pop Trash was realeased bootleg costed 10 times cheaper than legal CD.

Has Simon got a beard now?! [bigeyes2] I didn`t know! It`s curious to see. [magnify]
I loved Simon like he was, for example, in "Save A Prayer" video. So young, so pretty... Oh! [hearts] [love2] [tongue] [smile2]

And now he is fat!
It`s so sad. [sad]

But a human`s heart can`t be ordered! So...

In the bottom of my heart
Simon and me are never apart!

Nice pic Alien!!! They look great for it being so many years past the eighties [approve]!

Okay, so way in the past on this topic, but I need to add anyway, like some of you others said, my favorite DD song is The Chauffeur, but I don't really know everything they did. My favorite album is Rio [smile].

Nina_Chirkova

I must agree that The Chauffeur really may be the best DD song. It`s very beautiful! But I also like all their songs, because they are so different. [headphones]

I used to have a HUGE crush on Nick Rhodes, until I met him...

Have you heard it said you should never meet your idols or you'll be sorely disappointed? Yes, I was and big style!

Of course, it's not like that with Marian! In actual fact, when I met him, he surpassed all my expectations of him!

@ Wych

I think it was an amalgamation of things really -

*I was only 16
*He had just found his new pop icon status as it was just after the success of Planet Earth
*Basically, no-one knew what they should say or do! It was their first ever tour after all.

The box set is a dissappointment. It is stupid to keep only 3 tracks on each CD. It makes it totally unlistenable. I mean if you want to hear it in your car or discman, what a pain!! Not to mention that most of the mixes were made available on the 2 CD set release "Strange Behaviour" years ago.

I burned all the box set singles to two cd's - at least that way it is functional. The box set is also way to fragile. You thought the Crazyshow box set was bad?? Not compared to the Duran box set.. The colour rubs off if you touch it..

For what it is - it is HIGHLY expensive.. (seeing you are really only getting like 15 songs not avaailable on cd before)

So, here I am on Labor Day Weekend catching up on some on-line music "research". I decided to post about the absolutely fantastic time I had at the Duran Duran concert this past Wed. They played a very limited ticket show at Webster Hall here in NYC. I was on the balcony watching 1000+ screaming fans below jumping up and down to the old hits. It was amazing! The guys looked great (for their age) and sounded tighter than ever! The after party, if you could call it that, was a mob scene... waaaay too many people had VIP access, but I can understand how it happened seeing that this event was (1) incredibly anticipated and (2) the night before the MTV Video Music Awards. I think a lot of them were from Juicy Couture. This was actually my first Duran Duran concert, I would not have wanted to see it any other way than with the original 5 members... and I walked away with great memories!

wii,

thank you for your offer but now I have almost all DD videos in VHS-format, so I don`t need video-CD`s anymore. May be I will be interested in Duran Duran DVD in the future (if they release it).

Little,

You`re so lucky. Durans gave so many concerts in the US and the only one concert in Moscow. I wish I knew when they come to Moscow again...

well. I got The Greatest DVD.
It's so strange...
White letters on white inside the box.
Complicated navigation.
But lots of interesting stuff if you find it.
Really enjoyed watching it. Though had time to watch only 1 CD.
At last I have DD videos in great quality and can stare at John! [smile2]

I'm seeing Duran live tomorrow.. Though I am not looking forward to lining up all day in the FREEZING COLD! It will be odd seeing them all together again. Though I was never really a Roger/Andy fan and well though John's cool and all, I was always more of a Nick/Simon fan.

Duran Duran to release new album; the fab five return!

"Astronaut" (Capitol) will be out on October 4 with a lead single entitled "(Reach up for the) Sunrise" turned loose on September 20. This is the first Duran Duran album to feature the line-up of Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Andy Taylor and Roger Taylor in 20 (!) years.

The tracks: the aforementioned "(Reach up for the) Sunrise", "You Want More!", "What Happens Tomorrow", "Astronaut", "Bedroom Toys", "Nice", "Taste of Summer", "Finest Hour", "Chains", "One of Those Days", "Point of No Return" and "Still Breathing".

News taken from from release, http://www.releasemagazine.net/

I can't believe they didn't include Virus and Salt In the Rainbow on the new album. Those were by far the best demos.

They are on crack.

The new album is OKAY but really over-produced. What are they DOING?! What are they doooooing?! Sunrise is okay as a single. Astronaut is okay. most of the songs are mediocre.

I was looking forward to Beautiful Colours.. I saw them on tour this year and just loved that song.. I'm a wee bit bitter about them trying th "pimp" their fans on the last tour (charging HIGH prices to fans for better seats) and I'm not all that excited about this album. You'd think after waiting several years for it to finally come out that it would be beyond spectacular. From what I've heard though - it isn't :(

Don't like the radio edit of Sunrise at all. I'm wondering why they didn't go with the Sunrise mix from the Queer Eye soundtrack. It has so much more energy and is cleaner sounding. Hmmmmm...

The album is good, better than Pop Trash. Though I can't say I am overwhelmed about it. I was listening to the bad quality mp3's I had of AV's new songs more lol..

I think the new Duran is an album you have to have for a while to let it grow. Medazzaland I wasn't so keen on at first, but I do love it now.

Though the new Duran album has a sort of 70's flava to it in some places that I'm not so hot on. It's a solid album though.
