View Full Version : Human League
Another band I really liked back in the 80´s, Human League. Their singer Philip Oakey is very good. The song "Together in electric dreams" he made with Giorgio Moroder for the movie "Electric Dreams" is one of my favourite songs of all time.
Human League made these great songs:
Don´t you want me
Human
Louise
Life on your own
Heart like a wheel
Open your heart
etc.

Did anybody already listen to their new album? It is released today (at least here in germany). So far I only know the single "All I ever wanted", which is typical HL, if you ask me.
Not yet - I just heard about the new album a few days ago, maybe I should check it out - Iīve always enjoyed Human League !

Yesterday I bought the album and I really like it.
Okay, it is no album that will change the world, but it is perfect to listen to in this summer weather.
Especially I enjoy the few instrumental songs.
This is no big suprise, because I have many instrumental CDs and some of my biggest musical heroes make instrumental music. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
I can recommend this album to all HL fans out there!

I agree....All I Ever Wanted is typical HL material... analog synths and catchy lyrics... the voices are essentially unchanged from what I remember of the 80's!! So... Roland says there are instrumentals on this album? Interesting... very interesting!!

The whole album is typical for HL. Itīs not their best album, but a good one. Better than the last things, they have released.
And I think, that "All I ever wanted" is not the best song on the album. Just give it a try and listen to it!
Is the new HL-material a "back to the 80īs" thing?

Yeah, the new Human League album is a real return to form for them,Dare was a classic album but my faves are the 2 lp's by the original line up,''Reproduction'' and ''Travelogue''.Fave songs Black Hit Of Space and Empire State Human (Tall,Tall, tall i wanna be Tall,Tall,Tall),the sound is a bit harder on these albums and a bit more uncompromising,i havent really liked any of the albums much after Dare but i think each of the subsequent albums have had songs that i've liked on them so i bought them anyway.I wonder what would have happened if the other chaps hadn't broken away and formed Heaven 17.I think it would have been a completely different story.
Has the album been released yet?
It sounds interesting.

Hey, wii....
I don't remember the song. I saw Human League under the video and thought 'Oh! I know them!', but that's it.

The new Human League album is excellent. I wouldn't say it sounds "80's" because it doesn't. Lot's of analogue synths...no filler material...the instrumental tracks are wonderful...the Human League sound updated for the new century. Highly recommended! PS: The two singles for All I Ever Wanted are just ok. One has the video on it and one remix, the other has an extra track and one remix (contrary to what it says on the sleeve). The remixes are typical dance stuff...boring. Also, check out 1995's Octopus...it was also very very good. Travelogue, Reproduction, and Dare! are great too. One thing most people don't realize is that Human League had a big influence on Depeche Mode, Heaven 17, Erasure, and Yaz(oo).

Human league influence Heaven 17????
Heaven 17 were half the original line up of the Human League
Human League is among my faves too.
"I am the law" was from the album "Dare" from -81 if I remember right, and yeah, it's pretty good, eventhough my HL- fave of all time gotta be "Darkness", the synths, sounds and the lyrics really hooked on...

"the 80's child"
Donīt forget them, folks!
Ahm, I realized that HL started to play live after the last release "Secrets" in ī01, unfortunately not in Germany (as far as
I know) - has somebody seen them? Are they enjoyable on stage?
(You know, some electronic bands should stay far far away from any hall...)
Well, they played here in Denmark last summer - but I wasnīt able to join, but I would love to see these guys live - I have several albums and 12" with Human League.

Hmmm... I'd be curious about this...
quote:MTV have been reporting a fairly old tale of two Mansons. Garbage lead singer Shirley Manson recently revealed back in Feb that she had recorded a version of 'Don't You Want Me' with Marilyn Manson.[boggled]
@ Malila: Hmm, since Garbage have successfully stopped making
good records they seem to take any humble driftwood...
Won't surprise you that Marilyn is sooooooo boring to me...

I know... sounds like an easy hit... Still, I'm curious about how they used her aggressivity and his theatricalness... either they massacred the song or revived it [smile]
I ordered the new Human League DVD on Amazon yesterday. I can't wait to see/hear it ! [smile]
The new Human League DVD is not that special really. To me the songs are way too much like the studio versions. It's like the most important thing is Phil Oakey's voice (which is also quite good) and everything else is just extra. In my opinion live versions of the songs should be quite different from the single versions....the least you can do is let the audience sing a chorus or 2 and extend some good parts of the biggest hits....but HL does none of it in this performance....it's a big dissapointment for me!
Hmm, that's sad to hear.
Still I'm looking forward to those live dates (link above)...

The HL never came to play here in Brazil, But Philip Oakey is really talented, he is a visioner. In the 80īs clubs i go over here, i see a zilion lipstick Philip Oakeys, New Romantic isnīt it ? I like "Donīt you want me" specially one instrument Version i heard somewhere. COOL[wink]

images/speech/icon_speech_sigh.gifWell, they would think about a tour, especially in CE, hardly remember them here.
I'm being quite disappointed by empire state human Cd, they could review some other trax, such as Lebanon or Mirror Man....However, Octopus and Hyteria remain the masterpieces of NR wave.
Who wants to join me at Human League in Vega, Copenhagen, Denmark 18 Dec 2007 ?

Just found out that one of my favorite albums from the 80s has been released on CD, the solo project with Human League singer Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder.
Will buy this asap.
Good information, wii!
Have a lotta fun tonight! [beer]

It has been out for quite some time already. It actually includes the long versions of the singles!!

Yes it has and it's great! [smile]
Great concert last night - excellent voice and nice tunes, Electric Dreams was the last number and probably the best too, but it was a good concert, very 80s sound, and Philip has a real cool dark voice, I would love to see him in the studio with Bernhard, oh well....after the concert there was an 80s party, which was fun, we were to the end, as usual [wink]
@Willy: Was the music live or just a recording like they often do??
Well, some sounds were live, but most parts was recorded, but all synth bands do this, but there were synth drums and keyboards playing live, great sound btw.
OK Willy....that's at least better than when they just perform with 3 singers on stage!!
wii, have you been that lucky to have Onetwo as support again? [wink]
In Cologne a few days ago they played together...
Yes, OneTwo played again, it´s ok, but nothing really exciting, but the bar was close so...[wink]

I was disappointed in the concert. It was like they just delivered the songs in a hurry and went away again. Not much chatting with the audience or anything, and the songs was just like the recordings. Boring and predictable.
Still it was nice hearing some of the old classics.
The Human League have released a new single in 2010 called Night People
(unfortunately not a cover of the DIO song...[wink]), which you can have a watch and listen to here:

They are and will be on tour. 31th of March will be the release date of the new album CREDO.
http://www.league-online.com/
I was sceptical at the first listen, but the album is growing on me.
You synth people better have a look at it.
I'm beginning to like it more and more. Sky is a nice track.
Seen them last night. Split feelings about it. 35,- EUR is not too much for a concert nowadays, but it is when the band plays just 75 mins. incl. encores. Phil, Susan and Joanne sang very well though.
oBUzO1rCdUE
Susanne and Joanne singing well? They must have had singing lessons then [wink]
I'd bet they had. And Philip too.
The support band, Performance (from Manchester), was much better in singing though. Good synth pop
newcomers I'd say btw....
