View Full Version : Queen/Freddie Mercury
So many names of so many bands and solo artists but we/I have nearly forgotten one of the best singers that has ever lived: Freddie Mercury.
So many great songs:
Radio ga ga
Who wants to live forever
I want to break free
Days of our lives
Love of my life
etc.
I would love to hear Marian Gold sing any of these songs. I believe he, Morten Harket and George Michael are among very few people who can sing a Queen song without having to feel embarrased. George Michael did a fine job at the Freddie Mercury Memorial Concert back in 1991 (I think it was). Marian could do the same, or maybe even better. I´m afraid we will never know?!
R.I.P. Freddie
Mercury had the greatest vocal abilities
which even Gold can't compete with .

Heavenly song..."Who Want`s To Live Forever" ah... That was in the movie Highlander 1...and that was my first time I heard it...Love it
-Julian Moon-
Queen...pure GOLD (hehe) I say... one band I forgot to mention in the "any others" section is Queen... so many good songs, great melodies, and WHAT A VOICE... and the pianos... WOW... "Who wants to live forever" is a classic...heard it in the movie Highlander too... love that movie too... and "Don't lose your head" fits the theme of the movie VERY well too... "beware, Connor McLeod..." (no Trentie, I'm NOT speaking about you...)...and the guy who plays Curgan does his job really well (now as I somehow ended up writing about this movie...)
..."I want to live forever...forever young" <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>...

How great would that be to hear Marian Gold cover any Freddie Mercury song or be guest vocalist for Queen? Marian has the pipes to do it. He has the opportunity to reach the new generation of audiophiles and teach them what true genius and talent is. Can the Dreamroom make this happen or shall we just dream? sigh.....

well for now I guess we just have to live with the song that he wrote as a tribute to Freddie, which can be found on Prostitute!
[bigeyes] Which one ist that, Russ?

Ascension Day
You really didn't know Ja?
Yeah, I really didn't.
And I still find it hard to feel any connection to FM there.
Btw.: I don't think MG should cover any Queen/FM. Both guys are/were too strong personalities and
too unique, it doesn't fit. FM certainly wouldn't have covered MG/AV neither anyway. [smile2]

Favorite Queen trax:
Bohemian Rhapsody
You're My Best Friend
Radio Ga Ga
Save Me
I Want to Break Free
I Want It All
Don't Stop Me Now
Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy
Innuendo
Let Me Live
Too Much Love Will Kill You
Under Pressure
One Vision
I should even mention "The Show Must Go On." That one is just one of the most powerful tracks they'd ever done. I still get Lumpy Throat whenever it gets near the end.

Ascension Day was a tribute to Queen? I didn't know that either. [bigeyes] And frankly, I can't hear that.
I see Still Falls The Rain as a tribute to FM. I even hear Brian May's guitar at the end of the song. Well, it hasn't the typically May-sound but the whole arrangement is very similar.
I should even mention "The Show Must Go On." That one is just one of the most powerful tracks they'd ever done. I still get Lumpy Throat whenever it gets near the end.Ja, me too.
As for Ascension Day: Recently in a sleepless night I pondered about it and mentally compared the chords
and the structure to... well, I will not reveal.
But, yeah, heureka! [smile2]
So now I know which is the Queen song, it is tributing to.
But you guys probably will know some more story behind it.

My dear, as my intelligent doesn't reach your level I hope one day you will tell us (especially me) the entire story!
[sing]...That Fallen Angel makes me sigh, intelligence is just a lie...[smile2]
Ahm, well, for you a hint: The last album Queen completely released contains the song.
Wondering why no one else of those, who obviously know it all about it, shares it.

I remember Marian saying that Ascension Day was a tribute to Freddie...... though he didn't say why it was, just that it was for him. It may be that the reasons were to personal for him to divulge, but truly, Marian never said more than that........ anyone have anything else to add?

"Innuendo!" It has to be! There's an acoustic bridge in that one, just like in "Ascension Day," and it powers up again soon after.
Right????
10 points to you, Foolship1077!
Actually that acoustic part always had me reminded of "Innuendo", but I never spent any more thought
about it. Now if you compare also the verses, you'll find out that the chords are quite the same and the
vocal line has noticeable similarities, just the tempo is much faster.
You even can tell some details MG playing with typical FM expressions.
Still curious if somebody knows more.
I never liked Queen myself.
But I am impressed about how much interest it still is for Queen.
Freddie was superb on stage.
And "We are the champions" is maybe the song most people in the world has song once in their lifetime [smoke]
Interesting that it was mentioned on the mailing list quite a while ago but didn't get many replies...

From:
Subject: Ascension day = Innuendo?
Did anyone notice a strong similarity of Ascension Day and Queen's "Innuendo"?
The music:
- both songs are beginning with a rising power, then continue with a somehow
greek interlude, finally have its overwhelming climax and seem to break down
breathlessly in the very end
The lyrics:
- both songs content very strong pictures, both have the structure of
repeating the sentence's first words ("send in.../ show me" respectively
"while..")
And didn't Marian once mention that this song was about Freddie Mercury?
Very curious about this!

personally, I think you are reading too much into it.... I don't think he created the music to be like Queen in any way, I think the lyrics were very personal and meant to be the tribute to Freddie.

I agree with you Russ, but it is nice to find a link between those two songs.
And it is great Marian made a tribute to Freddie.

Okay, so I found out through one magazine, and a couple of YouTube videos, that the band ( + Paul Rodgers) is going to release their first studio CD, with new songs, later this year!
I don't know about you, but I'm interested. I liked the Return of the Champions CDs, and I've heard a bit of the new stuff via YT.
How about yourselves?

Yes, I'm interested. Although I can't imagine Queen without Freddy's voice. It was unique! [sad]
russharvey

yeah, I agree, Queen without Freddie is just another band.
I understand exactly that Roger and Brian cannot do without playing on stage and making records,
they are too much circus horses, as we say here, to retire.
But I don't need to see that and no matter that Paul does a good job, I just prefer to listen to the
original, specially their most interesting side: what they did in the seventies!
*gonna listen Live Killers later*

20 years ago today, Freddie Mercury gave up the ghost and departed this world. In tribute, the song that grabbed me as a 10 year old and is still a timeless classic today:
