as I was looking through United just now I noticed that many of the song credits were to Gold-Diamond/Gold. I was wondering what this meant. I mean, if both Janey Diamond and Marian Gold worked on this together you'd think it would just read Diamond/Gold. But for it to have Gold-Diamond/Gold confuses me. Unless Marian was married to Janey and she "hyphenated" her name like many women do today, but I seriously doubt this is true and I wouldn't want to start any rumors. So what's up?

music and lyrics, I believe.

Well, I think it means that the music was written / done by Janey and Marian, and the lyrics were written by Marian alone (or something). That is the only thing I can imagine.

I bought "United" from hotstuff yesterday. Iīve only listend to it once, and I think that Iīm a bit dissapointed... Of course itīs hard to say after just one listening. What struck me was the big involvement by Ricky. And Bernhard were mentioned in the credits, canīt remember for what right now... You can say that this is sort of an AV-album in a way...:).
But as I said... I didnīt like it at first.
"Cosmopolitican" and "For the Sake of Love" is absolutely the best according too me. A question: Is it actually Marian who is singing on "Five Years"?? It doesnīt sound like that! And another thing that confused me, in the booklet it sais (c) and (p) 1999. But didnīt United release in 1996???
Anyone knows the answer of those questions and maybe want to share your opinion of "United".

With all my love - I went into the world

It has been re-released in America by 1999. 1996 was a south-africa-only release.
I like DANGER IN YOUR PARADISE the most.itīs so BRILLIANT! And feathers&tar is also very beautiful!
Marianīs voice has surprised us very often, aint it so? Remember upside down, parallel girlz, waiting4thenulite and so on

Has anyone ever heard the original cover of "Five Years" By Bowie...I like Mr. Golds version MUCH better...And I love Bowie...he just doesn't do it with the flare that Mr. Gold does

So it really is Mr.Gold singing, It doesnīt sound like him, though. But as you said SR, he has surprised us before... In the end part of Five Years you can really hear that itīs him, and thatīs when I got confused... Cause then i thought it had to be someone else that sung the rest of the song...

I think that Feathers and tar is better on DS 9 than on united. That maybe depends on the fact that I heard that version first.

So is there a difference between the 1999 US release and the 1996 South African release. Different artwork or maybe some other songs as bonus trax?

@adi well OK then! That could have made sence, putting all solostuff on one cd instead of spreading out them.

@ariana As far as I know there are no differences between the different releases.

I got "United" yesterday and can't stop listening to it! Marian's voice is amazing! So different on different songs! The way he sings "Feathers And Tar" is something! really like it... I also like "Say It Ain't So, Joe", "For The Sake Of Love", "Missionary" and... well... I'll try to stop or I put here whole track list... I don't know why but I like "Change the World" demo from DS more than album version... but still like it!

... and there's one thing that I can't understand... Why lyrics printed in booklet differ from what Marian sings?

Simply because small changes to the lyrics is done all the time and sometimes after the printing of the lyrics handed to the record company.

Maylin.... this is part of Marian's magic..... you know, my mother in law thought that AV had more than one singer because she didn't believe the same guy was singing all the songs. Five years is definately Marian.

I like Missionary... It has both Marian Golds's vocals and Rupert Hine's hand in the mix (and vocals as well!)The use of doubling the lead vocal being one of Ruperts trademark sounds. I reccommend getting some of Rupert Hine's other production stuff.

I still must say that though United is a very cool Album with GREAT voice(!!!!!), it's not so much my style. I rather enjoyed the power and diversity of So long celeste...

btw, Jayney Diamond has also co-written the lyrics of For a million, still one of my all-time-favourites. Who is she?

Look what Iīve found at www.ruperthine.com:

From Biography ī95:

10/95 Marian Gold United (Album) Warner

What started out as an Alphaville album eventually became the Marian Gold solo album United, as the other band members left a sinking ship during recording. To date, this album has only been released in South Africa.

From FAQs:

Question: The latest Marian Gold album, produced by Rupert, is great! It's a shame that it was only released in South Africa. I have it on a promotional tape, which I got in 1995. It's too bad that the world will have to do without this fine piece of work.

Rupert, can you tell us what you know? Have you had any contact with Marian since the production?

RH: For some time (close on 10 years), I had been asked by, or on behalf of Alphaville to consider a production. When I finally accepted the challenge, the band were at the onset (unknown to me at that time) of a disintegration.

Whilst the project started as an Alphaville album, between pre-production and the move to my chateau in France for recording, we lost Bernard. Then... between France and the UK for finishing the recording, we lost Ricky. Thus the project became a Marian Gold album.

It was therefore a strange atmosphere through the recording period and it was also the first project I recorded at the new house and things weren't really ready yet, which for "techno" aficionados like Alphaville, was maybe frustrating.

After a period of estrangement the band got back together in 1996 and started working on another, hopefully official Alphaville album.

For a while it looked like the fruit of our endeavours was not to be heard anywhere... then after a trip to the "new South Africa", a deal was struck for a release there.

It was a difficult project and ultimately I feel it suffered badly under the strain of non-musical pressures. While there are some good moments, overall it is without a real centre and direction. Initially, I would not have agreed to produce a Marian Gold solo project.

Incidentally, it is only the third non-release out of 100 projects... so you win most, you lose some.

(25 April 1997).

Kaz

Interesting...explains why some names from the Alphaville circle crop up on the CD insert too. Wonder why he wouldn't agree to produce it if it had just been a Marian Gold solo project though...

Although I love individual songs on United, I have to agree with Hine when he says that the album lacks direction. It's like a mish-mash of songs strung together and doesn't seem to flow at all. Still love it btw, but not as much as So Long Celeste [smile]

Really interesting Justus! Thanx for digging this up!!

I'm not too crazy about any of the MG solo albums (SLC, United, CS) but the one thing that I like about "United" is the production which I think is great! But it must have been very difficult for Hine to work under such circumstances. I think it would have been a much better album though with (like Hine says) some more "musical pressure" (from Bernhard) because there are some songs with potential (like "Feathers and tar" & "Danger in your paradise") but something is (for me) missing in the arrangements....

FallenAngel
07 Mar 2004, 09:39
Agree with you Poul, if you listen to them you feel that there is something missing, that little magic that makes AV songs great!

But there are some tracks that you can place on a AV cd, like 'Say it ainīt so, Joe', 'Cosmopolitician', 'Feathers and Tar'.

Mags

Thanks Justus! Very interesting to read. Some of the United songs are incredible live - Cosmopolitician ... Say It Ain't So, Joe - but I agree that this album itself lacks something...Bernhard ? [wink]

I really like danger in your paradise, cosmopolitician, change the world, say it ain't so, and soulman. The rest lacks a bit finish and glamour. And, I have to agree, the production is not so detailed and deep, though the basics are very good.

Landed my own RSA copy over the summer, going through eBay as well, and while both solo albums are really good, United definitely outdid Celeste.

Foolship's Top Ten Tracks from United:

10. Missionary
09. For the Sake of Love
08. Change the World
07. Five Years
06. Caroline
05. Feathers and Tar
04. Soulman
03. Say It Ain't So, Joe
02. Danger in Your Paradise
01. Cosmopolitician

I must say that "Missionary" took a while to grow on me, so now it's a "pretty good" in a field of "excellents!"
