View Full Version : Ultravox
Although Midge Ure was mentioned, we forgot
to mention Ultravox in our growing list .

Oh! I could talk about Ultravox for hours. They were among the pioneers of synthpop. And they composed some of the most classical 80' hits: Hymn, Vienna, Visions in blue, Dancing with tears in my eyes, the voice... just to mention a few.
Ohhh... Dancing with tears in my eyes!
just wonderful, it grabs me personally when I'm listening to it...
a quite of hurt but very great song.

My favorite Ultravox songs are "The voice", "Visions in blue" and "Europeans"
My fave Ultravox songs are "Vienna" and "Dancing with tears in my eyes".
Dancing with Tears In My Eyes, Is definately my favourite Ultravox song, I remember seeing the video when I was a teen and it freaked me out a bit, It had that "The Day After" theme to it, Pretty spooky

Ultravox are one of my favourite bands, and they have been since I saw Dancing with tears in my eyes on a Swedish TV-program, called "Bagen" (which also was the program where I saw Alphaville the first time!).
There are mainly 3 different Ultravox you can speak about:
1. In the 70:s with John Foxx as the singer
2. In the 80:s with Midge Ure as the singer
3. In the 90:s when only Billie Currie was left from the original group
I can´t say I like (1) at all, only Hiroshima mon amour was quite good. And (3) is not either really what I like, though they have made some good songs (like Ingenuity and The new frontiers).
The Ultravox you have been writing about above is (2), which also is the Ultravox I like!
My favourites are:
Visions in blue
Vienna
Dancing with tears in my eyes
Hymn
The voice
Reap the wild wind
New Europeans
A friend I call desire
Mine for life
White china

Those are really great songs you mentioned there, Andreas.
To me there are only one true Ultravox band. The one with Midge Ure.

What happened to the subject about Midge Ure? I can not longer find it.
Therefore I express my thoughts about that subject here instead:
Late last year his latest album came out. When I heard it the first time I was a bit disappointed, but the songs grew when you listen to them more. And as David wrote, it is an album worth listening to.
In my opinion Midge´s best album is his first, from 1985, which includes the hit "If I was". That is also the album which is closest to the Ultravox sound.
Here are some favourites by him:
Call of the wild
Fields of fire
Rising
If I was
She cried
Hands around my heart
When the wind blows
Guns & arrows

@Poul: Maybe the title of this topic could be changed so there won't be any more confusions (?) If you search for Ultravox, there is only rutgerhauer topic listed [boggled]

I agree. I first thought "oh no, another double topic", but when I searched for Ultravox I didn't find such a topic.
@MalilaM: OK...I will change the title although I found the topic when I searched for Ultravox...
There's actually quite a lot of topics in this section that are called something else than the band/artist name...

Whoops, my excuses, I didn't search too thoroughly, and the topic was sooo forgotten, with last reply from 201.
(...but yes, sucking excuse isn't excuse)
Unless that ''double one'' isn't locked I could delete it as well.

To me, it is a pity that people always associate Ultravox with Midge Ure. Yes, I do like their stuff with Midge, at least the earlier albums (Rage in Eden is superb), but it cannot by denied that they are (gracefully) ageing children of the 80s. In contrast, the earlier Ultravox-stuff from the John Foxx-era is much more interesting in my view...it's more edgy, more experimental, more cynical, less pop - especially "Systems of Romance" and "Ha!Ha!Ha!" are music for eternity, if you ask me. Thumbs up for this often-forgotten chapter of U-Vox's story!
Agreed in tendencies, SR. The John Foxx-era is a really interesting thing (I think I've said that somewhere
around before...), I still wouldn't express it that categorical, because it's just something completely
different. But, yeah, who doesn't know Ha!Ha!Ha! and songs like "Young Savage", "My sex" "The Wild,
The Beautiful And The Damned" cannot be regarded as musically educated. [smile2]

Even though Midge Ure will always come to the minds of those when Ultravox is mentioned, I must say that I liked the couple of albums from the post-Ure era. Even without that powerful voice, I thought they did a reasonably good job, especially with Ingenuity.
Overall, I've always liked "The Voice," but have come to love the Celtic backup in "Man of Two Worlds." Couldn't pronounce that stuff to save myself, mind you, but it's just beautiful! And "Lament" is a nice one, too. I'd make that one my favorite out of all of them.

Truth be told, i have heard many other artists out there none except one sounds similair to alphaville. That one is ultravox, they are simply the band that is closest to av than any other band out there. I am in fact big fans of both those acts, any of you like them?[wink]
@Leningrad: I've merged your thread with the original Ultravox thread. We don't want multiple threads about the same topic....one of very few rules here. Please do a search before you start a new topic!

To be honest I never heard anything else of them than Vienna, which I consider to be one of the crappiest and most annoying hit singles of the 80's, along with Kim Wilde's Kids In America.

Yeah we do Willy....when you say "almost" is that because you can think of a band worth mentioning that we don't have here?? If so...start a topic! [wink]
@Leningrad: No problem....it's a "mistake" a lot of members have made. That's why us dreamkeepers are here. We're happy that we don't have to do much else than move threads. A lot of other forums have WAY bigger "issues" !!

If I may make some suggestions, try these:
The Voice
Hymn
Lament
Man of Two Worlds
Heart of the Country
We Came to Dance
Dancing with Tears in My Eyes
You're more than likely to find most of these on YT, and who knows, maybe there's one I missed that you'll find more enjoyable!

Amazing news!!! Ultravox reunion!
Ultravox is reuniting with all 4 members from the 80ies. UK tourdates are already planned. This will be the first time they have all played live together since Live Aid in 85. The tour is called "Back to Eden" - reffering to their best album "Rage In Eden" from 81.
Anyone who wants to join me for a trip to UK in april?
This is a dream come true. Im still pinching myself. Next to AV, this is my fav band ever.

My friend and i went to the Hammersmith Apollo Friday night to see the Ultravox concert. It was absolutley fantastic, i can't put into words how good it was. The support act was rubbish though, i don't even remember his name now and he sounded like he was being strangled as he sang [laugh](terrible). Most of the crowd laughed during his time on the stage. When Ultravox came out on stage the crowd went crazy. They sounded fantastic, the lighting was stunning. The concert was a seated one but that didn't last for long. We all ended up standing and people were dancing and singing. I was so pleased i had the chance to go. I tried to get some pictures and film some of it, but got told off several times for having my camera out as it was not allowed. There was someone not far in front of me who seemed to film the entire concert without getting caught which annoyed me. [banghead] Anyway we had a great weekend in London and met lots of nice people. We will always have our memories and that is all that matters.
Here is some footage of the Friday night concert, filmed by someone else of course [laugh]

I really don't get these mixes - it's so bubblegum. The original has so much feeling, esprit, uniqueness

I hope that all Swedish fans have seen that they play in Stockholm (Berns) on April 28, which is a Wednesday. I will be there, but it would have been easier if it would have been a non-working day afterwards since the concert starts at "normal AV-time", which means 22:00.

It was a great show. There were two other New Horizons members there (which I saw), Fredlund and Härdin. At least Härdin liked it a lot too.
I had heard some rumours that they were about to enter the stage 60 minutes late - like a group I think you all know [wink]
But instead they entered more than 20 minutes early, so I missed the first song in the show, which I guess was "Passing strangers".[ashame]
They played (apart from "PS") all songs from the album "The collection" (the hits) except "We came to dance", which was a song I am quite happy they skipped. They also played three more songs from the "Rage in Eden"-album, "We stand alone", "I remember" and "Rage in Eden" and two more from the "Vienna"-album, "Astradynes" and "Mr X" (the least good one they played in my opinion) and surprisingly "White china" from the "Lament"-album. SO I THINK IT WAS AN EXCELLENT TRACK LIST!!!
I also found that Ultravox has something to contribute with to the Mac/PC-topic, so I will write it there.[offtopic]

This may interest some Ultravox fans - Midge Ure is planning a fundraising gig. Not sure if there are any fans of the 80s group Japan out there like me but Japan's bass player Mick Karn has got terminal cancer and is not doing well financially so Midge Ure is organising this fundraising concert - this link explains all.....(hope I've posted this in the right place)

Sadly, Mick Karn died today. Just posted it here in connection with the gig Letty mentioned.
