Just picked up my limited edition #19 autographed 3" cdr called Auto: by I Satellite. On it - a very authentic sounding cover of A Victory of Love! He uses the same equipment as AV did and Bernhard says its remarkebly accurate!! About the only thing that is different is the vocals!

It only cost me 5 dollars to buy the 3" cdr and of course it helps a new band get their official start in this business (along with some proceeds to AV buy buying it of course) - his debut album Automatic is also out now and he is a HUGE fan of Alphaville as well as synth and electronic music!!

If you have the tribute album you will find he did a pretty good job covering Into the Dark!!

Great how AV influence continues to inspire others to make music on their own isn't it?

Thanks for the support Russ. I SATELLITE just finished playing our first show ever at the AUTOBAHN 2 Electro-pop festival in the US on Saturday night and it went very well. We played A Victory of Love to a packed house as the final song in our set and it was very well received. Afterwards, when I was asked which album the song came from, I encouraged several to pick up Alphaville's first album as it is one of our all-time favorites ever. Our full-length AUTO:MATIC was released the week before the show. The studio vocal version of AVOL is included on our limited edition EP, AUTO:. We are charging $5 plus shipping for the EP to cover the material costs and WEA royalties (approx. $80+). We sold about 30 of these EP's at the show, and have only about 50 of them left. So if you are interested, it is still available, along with our full-length AUTO:MATIC, by e-mailing order@isatellite.info and requesting purchase information. After only being out a week, we only have about 50 EP's left, so we don't expect them to last very long. Our website is currently under construction, and should be ready within the next few weeks. In the meantime you can check out some of our MP3's at www.mp3.com/isatellite. Our influences include Alphaville, Ultravox, Numan, Men Without Hats, Kraftwerk, Neu!, John Foxx, Human League, to name a few. We only use analog synths, hardware sequencers, and vintage effects for all of our songs (no computers).

Thanks i satellite for joining us.

Iīm sure many of us will enjoy your music - Iīm currently listening to "autoMat", which more than anything sounds like Men without Hats, just even more electronic, the voice is very similar.

In any case I think i satellite should have their own topic under "other artists".

Addition:

Just listened to all the songs - this stuff is GREAT ! Very simple 80s style, but just the way I like it - "Out Of Space" is definately my favorite right now.

i satellite, what is the total price including postage to Europe for your CD?

i satellite
04 Mar 2003, 02:59
Actually, the price after March 1st (the official release date) as indicated in our press release, is $12 for the full-length, and $6 for the EP. Unless of course your name is Marian Gold or Bernhard Lloyd in which case you get both CD's for free. :-) The full-length is also available at Amazon.com for $14 and soon from CDBaby and A Different Drum for $12. However, up until March 7, anyone on this forum (and this forum only) can buy both the CD and EP for the pre-release price of $15 plus shipping. Just send me an e-mail indicating you want the AVFORUM discount (order@isatellite.info). I'll include a free robot button and I SATELLITE sticker with your order. Please indicate male or female button. :-) Shipping to Europe is $10. Shipping to the USA is $4. Please add an additional 3% (US) or 4% (all other countries) to the final total if you intend to use Paypal (that's what they charge). Otherwise you can snail-mail me an International Money Order (e-mail me for the address). Shirts and additional buttons (a different button for each CD track) are also available. Thanks for your support!

hehe...... no doubts here Rod!!!! You may be new to this forum, but I know how many years you have invested in this band.... hehe... besides, how can you question the integrity of anyone who would take the time to purchase all the same equipment that AV used on Forever Young and then use it to make his own album!! Sounds faithful and true to me!! hehe!!!!

i satellite
12 Mar 2003, 19:27
First, thanks to all on this forum who bought my CD and/or EP. I really appreciate the support and I hope you enjoy them! I'm already planning a second album. The estimated shipping prices I mentioned above were too high. Revised (actual) shipping costs are as follows: Europe = $5. Canada/USA = $3. Those in Europe who paid $10 for shipping, I will be sending you a refund.

Secondly, Russ, I didn't buy the exact same equipment as Alphaville just to sound like them. I bought the equipment because I love analog synths. I didn't find out what synths they used until AFTER I obtained them, but then realized a lot of them were ones I had. Even so, I sold the PPG Wave, Odyssey, MS20, and several others that they used, so I didn't use these instruments on my version of AVOL. The main instruments AV used on AVOL were the JP-8, PPG Wave, and the Linndrum. I used the JP-8, LinnDrum, TR808, Voyetra-8, Minimoog, Waldorf Microwave, and Pearl Syncussion.

Thanks!

hehe - sorry about that Rod - I didn't mean to say that you bought all that stuff just to be like AV - I know you are just a synth freak and probably would have bought it all even if you had never heard of AV - guess I didn't explain myself very well - but I was just trying to say that I know you are a HUGE fan of Alphaville and a loyal fan for a long time and the fact that you use the analog synths is just an interesting side note, right?

Nice pic by the way..... but I couldn't find a free mp3 on that page.... only a link to mp3.com...... is that what you meant?

I Want You - Another great song. Catcy refrain.

Automat - Get me thinking of Kraftwerk.

Arlon - A nice instrumental song....

And from the EP AUTO:....

Bubbleboy:retro Mix - Nice version agein...[smile]

Photograph - Something special about this song....nice sounds...but miss some lyrics.

A Victory Of Love - A great cover but sounds a bit to simular to the original [thumbup]

Bubbleboy:Instruental - A great instrumental song!!! [thumbup]

A review:

I Satellite "Auto" (limited edition EP) $7 -- I Satellite just release
their debut album a few weeks ago and the feedback has been really positive
so far. They are a band that will certainly appeal to fans of old-school
80's-style synthpop. Comparisons to classic acts like early Gary Numan,
John Foxx, or OMD are not far off base. This EP is limited to only 100
copies and is released on a 3-inch CD (some automobile CD players may not
be able to play it since it is a small disc), so order quickly if you want
one because there are not many to be found! The first track is a short
instrumental, then there is a retro mix of "Bubbleboy" and also an
instrumental of the same song. There is a another song called
"Photograph" and then a cover of the Alphaville classic "A Victory of Love"
which imitates the original song note by note while the singer tries to
mimic Marian Gold's voice (a very hard thing to do indeed).

Just wondering... no matter how great that version may be, what exactly is the *point* in trying to recreate a song note-by-note!? There isn't one! The only point in doing a coverversion (that I can see) would be to improve the original, or to add something, or reinterpret it... at least change it in some way.
Oh, and it may be (sort of) note-by-note but it's not word-by-word! "Hello? Is this heart calling?" lol

Avil
06 Aug 2005, 16:12
I haven't heard the cover before, but I totally agree with fasto, this is not special at all, in fact - it's boring. If I wanna hear AVOL in this version I just listen to a better one - the original.

russharvey
06 Aug 2005, 18:06
you may think this cover is boring, but he worked very hard to find all the original equipment that AV used to make the song which was quite a task to find some of this old analog synth stuff even still operational. I know he had to find some things twice because the first one didn't work at all. Now, this may be boring to you because you expect a cover to be different and that is ok, but he didn't make this version for you, he made it for himself to prove that he could recreate the song 20 years later on the same exact (and very much obsolete) equipment and that is quite an achievement.
