Well, the first thing that I've noticed when
I entered this forum was a lack of DM .
Lets face it : DM are number 1 ( With all
the respect to the AMAZING Alphaville ).
I'm addicted for many many years .
Dave's vocal is simply supernatural
(Marian's also). Martin's lyrics and melody
are addicting - and they mature every album .
When I hear Dave live on a 93 Devotional tour
" Let me put you on a ship - on a long long trip - your lips close to my lips - ... let me show you the world in my eyes " my heart melts .
I'm really looking forward for their next album around March - must be perfect .
A must for every Pop-Gothic-Whatever fans
(You guys). DM influenced many of the greatests bands . I'm sure that Marian learned a lot from those three .

I'm in the mood to
touch the fire .

Hey!!Here is AV no: 1...Maybe not in other places, but here they are the best. And for every Utopian they are the best forever.

Come'on . We are both addicted to AV, my stereo plays AV all day long non-stop, I just said that MY no.1 band will always be
DM, I grew up on DM, I sprayed "DM" on walls, wrote it on the desks at school,
but it my personal opinion, every one has
his liberty in our jet set society :)

I really liked Depeche Mode back in the eightees, but I´m not so fund of the way they have changed during the ninetees. I must say that they (as one of very few eightees bands) have managed to stay "big" after the eightees, so they must do something right in terms of changing to please the young generation which are the ones that buys the most records.

But for me - Alphaville are the best!!!!!

No no no...
AV is no: 1..now and forever.

Well, I can only say that in my opinion
the "86-98 DM" is way better than the
"81-85 DM" . Touched by god . The music
they make now - the "Ultra style" - is
very mature, highest level available .
They are very different from AV, and the
only reason that many DM fans are also AV
fans and vice versa (!) is that both bands
are top quality .
"The sweetest perfection" . :)

I'm in the mood to
touch the fire .

I was a huge DM fan for many years. In my teenage years I had so many DM posters on my walls, that you couldn´t see the actual walls ! Now, I don´t like them that much, I mean their new music, and new for me is in the 90´s - I still love their work from 1981-90, but after Violater it went downhill, and Ultra is a depressing piece of work, except "it´s no good", which is actually good, but the 80´s were so much better - what a great time we had, and 6 concerts, first time in april 1986 - the Black Celebration Tour. "get the balance right" and "everything counts" is DM peak to me. But i still like them a lot.

Avihai
07 Dec 2000, 08:07
I think that you prefer DM earlier songs
because it than was pure S-Pop, now it's
not something which can be defined as a
Synthpop . But it's great .
When I bought it on 97 I didn't like Ultra
except for It's No Good , after I played it
many times I began to adore this creation and
It's No Good wasn't even the most favorite!

DM are great! no question about it. BUT!! after one hole record of DM you don't really wanna put another on! With AV you can hear another record after another. So in my eyes AV are better than DM! ( but let's not talk about A-ha or Duran Duran in this matter, co's they would win over AV any time but then again that's my opinion not yours!)

Guess the title of the new Depeche Mode Album!

For the next three days, you will be given directions for finding the letters that form the new album title. Simply follow the instructions, unscramble the letters, and take your best guess.

Clue for January 9th
(1) Take the first, fourth and sixth letters of the title of the b side of the "A Question Of Lust" single.

Clue for January 10th
(2) Take the third and fourth letters of the title of the b side of the "Shake The Disease" single.

Clue for January 11th
(3) Take the fifth and sixth letters of the title of the b side of the "Personal Jesus" single.

Now that all three clues are given, and all letters are revealed, unscramble the letters to form the title of the new Depeche Mode album. From all the correct entries sent to the address listed below (starting January 11th), one lucky winner will receive an advance promotional copy of the new Depeche Mode album, autographed by the band! The prize will be delivered to the contest winner approximately one week before the proper release of the album.

The winner will be selected from valid correct entries email to the webmaster directly at mailto: bratprod@pacbell.net with the email subject "Album Contest".

The trivia contest ends Monday, January 15th. The winner will be announced January 16th.

+ if you'll have an easy job (not KRAVY or something) you can do the same thing that my cousin did - he wanted to go to France to visit some friends so he told the army that he has to go to a family event.
it took a lot of effort and "games" but he did it :)

Just so everyone knows the new DM single Dream On will be released April 23rd! The album Exciter will be released on March 14th!
(March 15th for North America)

The tour will start in North America in June or July and it is reported (though not confirmed) that they will be in Germany in September/October. Though don't take anything I just said about the tour as final because nothing is confirmed.

You can actually download a clip pf Dream On from www.depechemode.com. More clips will be added every Friday! (a 50 second clip will be up this friday)

As you can tell I LOVE Depeche Mode. I think they are hugely underrated and I love them best when they are dark and sensual : ) Songs of Faith and Devotion is my favourite album. I also think I'm one of very few who adores Freestate off of Ultra. I love the lyrics though, that's why.

31 Jan 2001, 17:56
ok, i may be impopular for this, but I can't see what makes DM so good.
i like "just can't get enough", cause it's so naive :), but then I think the music is dark...

Dingerz
31 Jan 2001, 18:53
Oh god, everythign makes DM so good! The lyrics are amazing and baeutiful, and David's voice in incredibly sensual. I LOVE dark music..the more minor key, the better.

On the other hand, I quite hate Just Can't Get Enough. It's cheesy, immature, and does not give anyone any idea as to who DM are. (it was written by Vince Clarke and he of course left the band in 81!!) I appreciate JCGE for what it is - and I don't expect any new songwirters to produce mature songs immediately, but JCGE just hits a certain nerve because when a lot of ppl think "DM" they think JCGE - and JCGE does not sound anything like what DM did in the next 18 years of their career...

Try out Songs of Faith and Devotion!! Now that's DM.. Or of course, Black Celebration or Ultra.

Avihai
31 Jan 2001, 22:40
Tara : I can't believe it ! We think the same ! I already discussed with the guys about DM, somehow they like the early years,
For me, when Vince Clarke left it was the best thing that happen to the mature DM, I didn't
like the 81-85 as i like the 86-98 !
What makes DM is the understanding between
David and Martin . Dave can translate Martin's feelings into vocals, and his vocals are amazing, they express feelings, especially with that deep amazing sensual voice in songs like : Clean or all the songs from F&D .
I also think that Ultra is one of DM's best it's simply so special I can hear it forever. I Like the change in ultra and would like to hear how will DM return to the First really good album - Black Celebration, in Exciter .
btw - Enjoy The Silence was the song who started it all for me, without it I'd not know today who's dm or av or camou or ...
Sincerely,
Avihai.

04 Feb 2001, 20:05
I'm a huge collector of DM. I have every official UK and US release as well as a majority of all the promos, both CD and 12"
(I love vinyl!!) I've been collecting for 10 years though, so it's been a long while.

I probably have one of the largest video collections of Depeche Mode in the world. But that's cause I'm a videoaholic and I love to trade for these neat appearances. I've spent the last five years accumulating all these TV appearences by trading with DM fans off mailing lists and message boards. I think I have over 90 hours of Depeche Mode on video. If you want me to send you my list, just let me know! It's a huge hobby of mine - collecting TV appearances by them. With the invention of the net, it got a lot easier to trade worldiwde to get a hold of these things. That's why I want to get my hands on the Alphaville videos! I absolutely love collecting videos/TV apperances. You learn a lot from them, and it's neat to actually see the band in action. It kind of bridges the actual physical absence. For example, I'd love to get my hands on a boot of an Alphaville concert because I've never had the opportunity to see them live : ( So at least it would give me an idea!

But that's the nest thing about videos, which is why I like to collect them.

The one bradcast of KROQ was a special edit and the quality (now that I have the album) SUCKS!!!

OPINIONS
--------
EXCITER ! I got no idea why people said it's a Black Celebration like, definately nop, it's a new calm Ultra- very romantic album, but not an album that goes with live performance, it doesn't have a dance-able hit (or two).
Personally I like it, but that's not fair coz I'll like DM even if they will perform BSB's songs :)
Martin should've written another "it's no good" for this album to come out with good bsides remixes and a videoclip, so that DM will be able to gain new fans, a next generation of us.
I got no idea how the promotional ver. got into the net but, hey! now I don't have to wait for two months and I'll buy the album anyway so who caress ??

Avihai - it DOESN'T have a dancable hit? What about I Feel Loved??? That is actually a DANCE song!! This could be a huuuuge hit - remix it a bit, then slap it on the radio :)

And I think that a lot of the songs are really really "theatrical" In the sense that you could make a stage show out of this album. I have never felt that way about a DM album - that's it's theatrical. Also, it has such a new "up to date" and "hip" sound that it has extreme potential to pull a whole new fanbase. I didn't feel that with Ultra. Ultra was for the core fans, Exciter is for well..anyone!

This album just rocks. It's my 2nd fav DM album of all time. (behind SOFAD of course)

Willy - I have been insanely busy in the last few days and well now I have to go to work for 10 hours. I am home tomorrow so I'll be at the chat. I will then send you the mp3's!

Tara:
I still think that ULTRA is the best album of electoric pop and mode's greatest, ofcourse all the others are great competators :)
I Feel Loved got faster beats yet it's not catchy enough to become another "Enjoy the silence" or "it's no good" . Not even close,
it should be remixed to a bside.
Dream On might do the job if it will appear on MTV (fanatic me, I don't wanna see DM on mtv, they're to good for that).
Maybe Exciter is like Ultra - you need to "learn" it well, then it becomes your fav.

Oh god, what a wonderful day : ) First I got two copies of this month's Gear magazine cause David Gahan is in it (full page pic, he looks amazing!!) And then I get home to find out that the tour dates have been released The tour starts here in Canada on June 15th!!!

And there is a pic of David in Hamburg already!!

http://www.depechemode.de/tribute/aktuelles/dave_airport_hh.jpg

The pic is from the German depeche mode page www.depechemode.de

So DM are done in North America by August 14th-16thish (cause they end in LA and they always add dates when they sell out) So that means they'll be in Europe by late August/early September for sure!

And When The Body speaks is far from boring..it is one of the most beautiful songs DM have ever written!! Just listen to the way it ends, the guitar solo and the rest of the layers fading out.. And David's singing... Man, his singing has got to be the best it has ever been. And I don't say that lightly. People said he sounded better on Ultra. I didn't think so. So I mean it this time!!

I have to reply (Yes I find time, it's 3:10 A.M. here!)
Dave is still handsome !
When the body speaks is beautiful, one of Exciter's bests! "I'm just a slave here at the mercy of a girl". But I understand avil because it's another Depeche Mode founded on 1997.
I've just understood the connection between Black Celebration and Exciter, it's not the melody but the content - the lyrics.
For example the song Shine : "put on your blindfold and a dress that's tight, and come with me on a mystery night, open your eyes","forget the pictures on your t.v. screen". The Sweetest Condition : "taking hold of the hem of your dress". Very similar content in most of the songs to BC subjects.
Ohh, and there is a quite not good song in Exciter - Comatose ( what da ???)
Now that I gave it a serious listening with the lyrics in my hands I can say that it's a very good different DM!

DM is a band that are here to stay!

02 Apr 2001, 23:30
I have a similar story with DM references:

One day our car broke down out in the middle of nowehere. My dad was about to call a tow-truck, but he had no idea what street we were on. There wasn't a road sign in sight. We would have had to walk a looooong way to find out but luckily I had noticed the street sign as we turned onto the street way back. IT was called Martin Grove. I immediately made the connection "Martin Gore" and it stuck in my head. So luckily, we had all the info we needed..lol.

And yes, DM are here to stay! I am so proud of them, as I am Alphaville. They are two examples of groups who have consistently been able to produce new and creative music over the span of two decades. Neither give up in the face of growing commericalism and excessive musical crap. (I'm sorry, I found The Smashing Pumpkins excuse to get out of the business cause they were "sick of competing with buy bands" rather weak..)
Like I've said before, and as I'll say time and time again, there is nothing like a band that evolves and produces QUALITY music year after year after year. They are a dying breed..and I find that sad..

THANK YOU Avil!! :) I really. really appreciate it!! You're an angel!! I'll get in touch with you tomorrow when I'm not tryng to do 402702 things at once. hehe..

DM as the most overrated band in the world?? I think not, DM don't get ANY respect by the basic media!! They're always slagged and never mentioned when ppl talk about great bands. It's sad cause DM have inspired far more then most bands out there. They have truly given to the music institution. Smashing Pumpkins, DeVision, Mesh, Apoptygma Berzerk,Rammstein, Deftones, Nine Inch Nails, and the list goes on. All those bands are here today because of inspiration from DM. And if you check Marian in one of his interviews, he said one of his fav bands (at least at the time) was DM! :)

Instead I would say REM is the most overrated band in the world. (and I mean n the sense of truly praised by media) BOOOORING! hehe..

I got 1st row for Dallas and 4th row for Montreal for dm today...more to go still..

Trent, David and Willy, I agree with you. DM arenīt that great anymore. In fact they have never been as great as Alphaville. Their best period (for me) was 1980-85, and my favourite DM songs are songs like "Just canīt get enough", "Master and servant" and "People are people".

And when we talk about bands inspiring others I think that bands like Kraftwerk, OMD and Human League have been just as big (or even bigger) inspiration to other synthbased bands.

Edited by - poul e on 21 Apr 2001 08:01:42

Dingerz
21 Apr 2001, 19:30
Kraftwerk yes, OMD unmfortuately not. OMD inspired ppl lke DM and that generation but were ignored by the new generation. I find that sad cause I love OMD's stuff. (the last album The Universal was his best yet) Human League I never found them so good. They're alright, but quite inferior to DM by a million counts. I rarely see them mentioned as inspiration by synth bands. I'm sure they are, but n a lesser way.

I don't know how you guys think DM are no good anymore, I guess to each one's own but how can one listen to say Some Great Reward and call that better than Songs of Faith and Devotion, or Exciter?? I just can't fathom it! Their older stuff is quite dated and really inferior to what they are doing now. That's what I love about them, that they evolved and progressed.

I think why people liked them better before and not so much now is cause they have stepped away a bit from the pure synthpop. They have integrated more instruments and now sound more round as a band. It is more bluesy now too which may turn people off. But god, I love it!

The lyrics are just amazing and that's a huuuuge part of why I love them. They just speak to me in every which way. Songs of Faith and Devotion has some of the best lyrics ever written by anyone. A real help when you're down. They are so inspirational.

And I think I like Black Celebration better than Violator.. I don't know why everyone hails Violator. It falls fourth on my "'best albums of DM list"

But I guess that just shows the diversity of everyone's different tastes.

Love you all !
DM are ... @#$%^!#$% ... everything ...
I don't listen to their early works till 86
BUT it doesn't matter, there's enough for everybody, many styles that fit into one great thing, the music at its best (Vio,Faith,Ultra,Exciter,Black) with new directions that always keep the fans addicted, maybe because they're addicted to David's voice or Martin's words, but it works and nothing cannot beat Enjoy The Silence (although there are equal competitors as Alpha) .

I have just recently received a copy of the "Exciter" album and some of you will perhaps flame me for saying this but I canīt see what all the fuss is about. It is so boring!!! All the songs are slow and on most of the songs Dave Gahan doesnīt really sing but just talks his way through. I never understood why so many people think he is such a great singer. Boring? I don't know what planet you guys are from : ) lol.. And this is also the best vocal performance David has ever done whcih most of the DM community agree. David has a sensuality in his voice that Marian does not have. Though of course Marian does have phenomenal range which David doesn't have. You can't really say one is better - it's a matter of taste and what you are looking for in a voice. It's a matter of opinion, not fact. And there is no way whatsoever that David is just "talking" through the album. The man is singing! I mean listen to I Feel Loved: "As the darkness closes in, In my head I hear whispering, Questioning and beckoning, But I'm not taken in.." AAAAAAAAAH *shiver*
There is so much melody on the album - and if you listen hard it's amazing to hear how they layered david and martin's voice together on the album. You keep hearing things you never heard on the first, second, third, fourth listening.

DM is an aquired taste. To each one's own. It all winds down to what you want in music. But man, for me, DM packs it ALL in every time. 60 milion records sold and a devoted fan base from hell is the result. I find DM is a love it or hate it band usually for people. But they've done something so few bands have been able to do. I am so damn proud of them. The depth of their music and how much it touches people is the main reason why their fan base is so hard core. But I guess you have to be in the same headspace to understand.

But that's why there are so many bands. We're not all in the same headspace so we need different bands to identify with. I like all my fav bands for different reasons.
Each band has something special that another doesn't. Though DM is the only band I find perfect. But I am thankful I found a band that gels with me so damn well. If anyone finds a band that gels with them almost 98% you are really lucky.

Oh god, is it June yet? hehe..

OK Dingerz, so you are a hardcore DM fan, Iīm not!! But I donīt hate them either. I just donīt think that their music is that special. I liked their early stuff very much, but the right word (for me) to describe the music they make now is "boring".
Iīm listening to "I feel loved" right now, and the only thing (for me) that remotely sound as singing is when he says/sings "I feeeeel loved". Maybe thats why he does it app. 50 times during the track?
But I can see what you mean when you say he has sensuality in his voice, but that does nothing for me. For me singing is the way Marian or Morten Harket does it.
DM has a lot of fans, yes. But for me they are very overrated.

Dingerz is very right in this question, itīs a matter of taste. But I donīt think that DM is so special, while I think that AV is the most wonderful band in the world...
And Iīm sure dingerz feel the other way. So itīs a matter of what you like and donīt like...

Actually Ive always thought that David was a better singer than Martin. I especially like the version of "Enjoy the silence" where David sings.

Now to get back to why DM is not really my thing: I dont think their lyrics is as wellwritten as AVs lyrics. And AV seem to be much more ironic about themselves and the musicindustry. I feel DM takes themselves a bit to seriously. Furhtermore DM is always being praised for being "dark" and controversial. But that dosent nesseceraly make it good.

The reason Im much more to the AV, A-ha and Duran Duran area is that they make intelligent popmusic. God old melodic pop! Thats what I want.

Still, I dont hate DM. They've made some damn good songs over the years, and I have several of their albums.

David, were on the same wavelength here . . .

And yes Avil, of course itīs a matter of taste. I certainly donīt hope that Dingerz think I am angry with her for liking DM. We just have different taste in music, and itīs fun to disagree.

Well Alphaville "gels" with me Whatever the bloody hell that meant...But AV is all and everything in a band I can think of...Marian not having a sensual voice??? BLASPHEMOUS!! (Rumours???) okay stupid joke! But I don't know...When I listen to Marian I am taken to a VERY sensual place!! I am not here to trash DM...I just don't particularly think they are all that and a bag of chips as alot of people do..All I asked here was if there was anyone else besides me that's an AV fan that doesn't like them...that's it...I had this weird out of place feeling that I was the only one that didn't think they were all that marvelous...I am glad to know I am not alone..yet I will not put DM down either..David yes, has an incredible voice...they have their good points to the people that do enjoy them, and more power to them....But I did take offense to dissin on Marian *Puts up his dukes* BAD BAD Dingerz...Go to your room...no pudding for you!!! *Is teasing* Please do not take this seriously...I am a carefree dude...I like peace and love and all that business....Call me hippie boy born 2 decades too late

Well of course I know that you all aren't going to bow down and proclaim DM gods! I mean we're on an Alphaville message board here!

I do find Alphaville lyrics really good (of course) but I just find DM's lyrics much more intimate for me. But that's just probably cause I find DM talks so much about things I have gone through and things I believe in. It's scary - I get a new dm song and it's like Martin has been in my head. I just think that's real neat. But as I said before that's why I like a lot of other bands (including alphaville!) Cause those bands talk about things that DM may never talk about.

For me, lyrics mean EVERYTHING. My fav bands all have one thing in common: They SAY something to me. I mean yes, music is important, but to me a good band is only good when it has the right balance of music and lyrics. I guess cause DM's lyrics hit right on what I feel and what i believe 99% of the time that's why I hold them so close to me. But again, that's a very personal thing so of course i don't expect everyone to agree.

We all live different lives so while DM's lyrics may say nothng to someone, it may say a ton to someone else. Same goes for every band. I sometimes feel guilt cause I have always loved say Erasure, but as I get older they start to take a backseat cause the lyrics just aren't there...

That's why I loved Salvation when I heard it a year ago. I thought the lyrics were amazing. And of course I always loved Forever Young. So I'm glad that I can count Alphaville as one of those bands who say a lot to me. It also shows that they are intelligent. But DM just hits me deeper most times.

And if you think DM takes themselves too seriously - go watch the video to It's No Good hehe..

Hi folks,

I like DM very much, but only the 'old' songs. I don't like their new single. It is boring, I think. But I also liked 'It's no good' and that is from the 90s.

There was a DM-day on VIVA TV last Sunday (or Monday???). I saw some interviews with them from the 80s. David looked so sweet :-))))

I love it that he's so happy now. And Dream is is one of the worst songs on Exciter, so don't judge the whole album by that! It's like judging all of Prostitute by Beethoven.. Amen Stefan! And yes, it's true. The more you listen to Exciter the more you hear. It is not simple at all. There are a ton of sounds buried in this album. There are sounds you cannot hear the first couple of listens. Exciter is the type of album thar grows on you. Most albums I don't like that much first are the ones that have the longest, lasting appeal. Figure that out!

It's not too far away for the release! And I'm happy cause it is now rumored that Dead Of Night is planned as a single!! *does a happy dance* I never thought it would be a single..

I have.. umm.. sort of had the album for a month or so, and have listened quite a lot to it. I like it. Many of the songs grow as you listen.

You can't compare DM to AV. DM is to me monotonous lead vocals with strange synth sounds. A monotonous line for one instrument with strange vocals. Exciter is DM.

A few of you have mentioned "I feel loved", and I think this is one of the tracks that stands out early when you listen to Exciter. It's aggressive and emotional. It's a song you listen to when it's on.

The first single, "Dream on", is an interesting song. On the recent albums they have chosen songs I didn't like as much as first singles, so this is a step in the right direction, in my opinion.

A song like "Shine" would be incredibly boring without the good beats.

"Dead or night" is a very strange song that I still can't get a grip of. In many ways typical to DM.

I like what they've done with "The sweetest condition". To call it a remix of "The sweetest perfection" would be a bit much, but there are a few similarities...

I wouldn't mind a few more up-tempo songs, but things are never the way you want them to be.

Disclaimer: I've never been a big fan of the songs Martin sings on, and "A question of Lust" that everyone loves is one that I rate very low.

I'm a danger in your paradise.

hey folks, the quite fantastically crafted 'dream on' went straight in at number 6 in the uk charts, can anyine let us know how it faired in other countries?

Avil - I don't get it? After all those posts about how boring Dream On was, you now realize that what you had was not the real song? Is that what you're saying? Cause on Napster a ton of songs are mislabelled DM and they really aren't.

Dream On statistics:

• 1 (NE) - GERMANY
• 1 (NE) - ITALY
• 1 (NE) - SPAIN
• 1 (NE) - DENMARK
• 3 (NE) - FINLAND
• 4 (NE) - SWEDEN
• 6 (NE) - UK
• 7 (NE) - NORWAY
• 9 (NE) - AUSTRIA
• 13 (NE) - BELGIUM (Wallonia)
• 13 (NE) - SWITZERLAND

DM's Barrel of a Gun in 1997 was the highest charter at number 4. So DM are still in the same ranges as usual!

DM's 1993 album Songs of Faith and Devotion entered the US charts at #1 which was a huge victory for them. It was higher than Violator! (#7 US) Very few bands from overseas have had a #1. (under 10 bands have done it)

People are People hit UK #4, but that took a while, which is why Barrel of a Gun hitting it right after release was the highest chart.
Just Can't Get Enough hit UK #8 so as you can see DM's popularity and success has been better in the 1990's and now 2000's than it was in the 1980's. Pretty neat huh? : )

Most of DM's hits are anywhere from #4 to #22
With the 1997 and 2001 releases hitting in the top 10, it rather looks as if DM's sucess is quite strong. It is great to see them maintain their status in the music scene, playing with the big boys. Dream On commanded 12% of music single sales last week all on their OWN.

Anyways, just some stats.

PS - HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVID!

14 May 2001, 23:23
Oh willy - you'll miss out! Best in the 80's? noooooooo waaay! Alright, yes that is my opinion. :) But I think that Alphaville are better now too. Both DM and Alphaville are just far more mature now, so I can't understand when people say that older stuff is better. But that's just me I guess. The best DM concert was devotional 1993 so far in my opinion. (the atmosphere was amazing) Singles tours are usually boring no matter what group, so that's why the DM 1998 shows were good, but not great. This concert looks to be amazing! (they are pulling a lot of stuff out of thr archives, especially from the black celebration era) I would love it if they could be silly and do something like Photographic. Such a silly dinky song, but nostalgic.

Seeing a band before in other years is not the same as later. If you saw alphaville 4 years ago, is that the same as seeing them now? Though ticketmaster does release good seats close to the concert date. (I had friends get floors in 1998 4 days before the concert.) And simpledumbpilot - I so agree! Put Westlife on that charter plane destined for crash city..lol.

And charts mean nothing. If they did then Alphaville pretty much sucks huh? I mean afterall, spice girls and britney spears have far superior songs than DM and alphaville....NOT! It's just good to see dm command top spots onthe charts right away cause it means that they still have the devoted fanbase that runs out the day the single/album is released to buy it. Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash have the same thing. They go up up up the charts, then down. That's cause they don't appeal to top 40 listeners.

So, today was the official release- date of "Exciter" in Germany - and...perfect!
Same like Salvation, one feeling through the whole album, i love it. I think my tonight favourite will be "comatose".
And think about Marian Gold singing some vocals on "easy tiger"!
Other favourites: "freelove", "goodnight lovers", "i am you" and "when body speaks"...sounds like U2, but thatīs a compliment and they also have the same guy for the photos!
One photo in the booklet looks the same as U2s "Achtung Baby-booklet".
On the german amazon-site there are a lot of dm-fans making a review on exciter, they say that itīs boring and too much guitars, and they just give 4 from 5 points, because itīs Depeche Mode, and in the past everything was better. Oh, I hate this, but know the same too-much-guitars-too-less-80s-discussion from alphaville fans. Life without changing is nothing to live for. Think about somebody who talks to you in your youth, that you are a good guy, but from now on you are not allowed to change...no chance to survive, i think. But thatīs just my feeling for this, because i love the new things. I can also understand Willy, because itīs a question of personal taste, and I can respect his view much more, than the opinion of those fans who just say that they love everything, just because itīs Depeche Mode...thatīs no serious reason.
I love Exciter!

Willy, from your last post it sounded like you were absolutely NOT going to go cause well, it didn't matter since you saw dm before. I was just confused cause you were so eager to find out the tour dates before so it seemed odd that suddenly you couldn't care less.

And it is perfectly fine to think a bands older stuff better than newer. (for example people who like pure synth don't like dm gettng more soulful, adding more guitar, etc) But I guess cause I love new DM so damn much I can't wrap my head around someone thinking Some Great Reward or Construction Time Again better! It is so **ODD** to me.

I also guess I am touting Exciter so much is cause it is simply amazing - not just cause it is DM. I have not been this happy with an album in general since 1993's Songs of Faith and Devotion (which I thnk is the best album ever by any band) I have to admit, I did not think so highly of Ultra. (I mean I liked it, but it had its weaknesses) So my liking Exciter soooo much has a lot to do with me just wanting to share this fantastic album I guess. It's the same as me rambling on to my poor friends about how great Salvation is and how they should definately pick it up..lol.
(though it worked to a great degree!!)

I should really be a promoter. If I like something, I really love to share it. heh.
Maybe I should go back to school for PR.

I will go to see a DM concert this time around. I've never seen one before. And sure Willy is going too. He persuated me to go with him.

If anything DM are going back to their roots by using more guitar, after all thats what they played before getting synths, and lets not forget that they've been there since Love In Itself in 1983.

Dream on, dream ooooon..da na na na..

Well hey, it is the second weakest track on the album afterall. I am so glad I Feel Loved is the next single. A fantastic song to dance around to. And in the video David is apparently being chased by dogs..heh. That ought to be good to see.

Avil, you are supposed to buy the album, not the single! hehe. If you aren't an obsessed fan of the group, I always found it better to buy the album instead of the single. I mean singles are $10 and the album is $14. It just makes more sense to buy the whole bloody album for an extra $4. Plus, the dream on mixes suck! So yes, the mixes make the song quite bad. I hope the I Feel Loved mixes are better!

Awr Avil :( Keep checking your ticketmaster (or agency) They often release tickets closer to the concert which the promoters held but didn't use. It's just a question of checking!

I just found this excellent review of the new DM album at billboard.com:

"Depeche Mode gets back on track with Exciter, full of the dark synthesizer riffs and foreboding vocals that first made the group a modern rock phenomenon in the '80s. The songs are diverse: the understated "When the Body Speaks" sounds like U2 as interpreted by This Mortal Coil, while the grinding "Dead of Night" is reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails. Two things hold the set together: Mark Bell's quirky, other-worldly production and Dave Gahan's still-haunting voice, which has never been more agile. Exciter isn't consistently satisfying, lacking the thematic coherence of 1986's Black Celebration or the melodic simplicity of 1990's Violator. But after a couple of less-than-stellar studio albums, fans who "Just Can't Get Enough" Depeche Mode will be happy to see the band taking a step in the right direction. Thanks to such standouts as the danceable "I Feel Loved" and the first single "Dream On," Exciter is the best Depeche Mode album in a decade."

yeah, Dead of Night is one of those love it or hate it songs. I cannot wait to see it live! David says he gets to stomp around and be goth boy lol...

Ithink the BEST part of the whole album is David's singing. It is by far the best he has done. It is nice to see a lot of reviews point that out.

Took a small part of a text someone wrote on another forum about DM.

"I guess they needed money to buy drugs. The way to make more money is using guitars, because then you're a rockband.
And by the looks of Dave Gahan in the clip of "Dream on", you know he paid a price. He looks exactly like"

Avil, whoever wrote that clip that you posted needs a life. They are absolute losers. I am sad that people like that exist in the world.. I guess those type of people have to put down other to feel secure about themselves. Sad.

Funny, David looks F%@%ing amazing in that video. And in fact he looks better than he did in 1998, go figure that one out! :)

No I was not at the roxy - only 400 ppl were of which only 150 were the general public.

I may very well be at the last 2 US shows in aneheim though!

One of my favorite songs is the Behind the Wheel/Route 66 Megamix! That one and Just Can't Get Enough! But then, I have to agree... I don't like much of their new stuff either!

Unfortunately, their singer does not have a multidimensional voice.... I like his voice, but DM cannot cover a full range of styles like AV can.

Heyw! Great to see another NIN fan here!

Quick update - no I am not dead :)

I met David Gahan and got my pic with him!! I will scan it and have it up here soon. I also hung out with Mart and Fletch in Toronto (and possible again here in Chicago)

The shows are simply amazing!! This is perhaps DM's BEST tour ever done. I am soo impressed. David is all over the stage and back to his old antics. Nooone will regret not going to the show.

Anyways, I will catch up on AV after June 26th when I get home!

Have you seen DM's new video clip
It is called I FEEL LOVED, taken from the new album and it is so cool !
The band is at a club, there are cops and police dogs all around.... looks like a crime scene or something like that....
David is wearing a shirt without sleeves - he's got so many tattoos !!!!
There was also a short clip of making the video on MTV.... That Martin Gore dude is so funny !!!!!

the atmosphere of the video is very violent and intence. DM must be going for a dirty underground image.

This is strange because the song is called I FEEL LOVED and Martin said that its about "feeling that you are loved for things that you do" .....
Besides, most (not all) of the new songs by DM are about love and the rythem of the new album is quite soft....
I dont really understand why they made this video clip so "dark"....
