Back in the 80´s this danish band released 2 albums. On each of them there were 1 great song. The first was "I saw your dream" and the second "Whale song" which is one of my all-time-favourites!

Yeah especially "Whale song" is really beautiful. The best 80' ballad by a Danish band!

Iīve been listening a lot to the two DeFilm albums lately as I have borrowed a CD burner and transferred the best songs to CDR. I must say that the whole album "Coming to your heart soon" is really good. Especially the songs "Whale song", "I see light", "Make believe" and "Is it true" are great! And the Extended Remix of "I saw your dream" is fantastic!!!!

Itīs just too bad that so few people know who this great band is/were!!!

Yes Poul,

I remember that Whale Song you put into the MiniDisc you sent to me.
It's very great, and the song has a meaning.

What do you/we/I do to change the world ???

Iīve been "spreading the word" about Whale song lately and hereīs the lyrics for that very beautiful song:

I see the light of the winter
I hear the sound of the summer
they say the atmosphere is burning
and that the deserts are returning

Hey you, what would you do to change the world
hey you, what should I do to change the world

Well I could sort it out allright
and I would kiss you at night
I guess that everybody is in it for love
well I could sort it out allright
and I would kiss you at night
I guess that everybody is in it for love

I know the whales of the ocean
I see the elephants in motion
I hear the moving of the thunder
I see the mountains going under

Hey you, what would you do to change the world
hey you, what should I do to change the world

Well I could sort it out allright
and I would kiss you at night
I guess that everybody is in it for love
well I could sort it out allright
and I would kiss you at night
I guess that everybody is in it for love

I guess that everybody is in it for love
I guess that everybody is in it for love
I guess that everybody’s in

Hey you, what would you do to change the world
hey you, what should I do to change the world
hey you, what would they do to change the world

Well I could sort it out allright
and I would kiss you at night
I guess that everybody is in it for love
well I could sort it out allright
and I would kiss you at night

I guess that everybody is in it for love

Thanks Poul! Yes, this Whale song is very good! Very catchy, and I too have listened to it quite a bit since you sent it to me!

when you sent me the whale song it was all i listened to during the rest of the evening..i had to lock my outdoor so i could sing along and know that no one would surprise me in the middle of the concert.
i think this song has a little bit if "Afternoons In Utopia" in the lyrics aswell as in the music. i played the song for my mom,and she thought it was an unreleased Alphaville-song from Ds or something...and i agree, the singer of DeFilm and Marian have some voice similarities. although i dont find "I saw your dream" as good as "whale Song".the sound is completely different in any way.
but i really consider to buy a album right now..they seem to be a band worth listening to.

@Russ: Nice to hear! The song is too good to be kept a secret!!

@Defender: Well....DeFilm never released anything on CD so for you to buy their records you will need to go to a place where they sell used vinyl records. DeFilm released only 2 albums "DeFilm" and "Coming to your heart soon" and 3 singles "I saw your dream" (7" and 12", "Bitter surprise" (7" and 12") and "Whale song" (only 7"). And itīs very hard to find those records, even here in Denmark. But as far as Iīm concerned the 2 solo albums (released on CD in 1993 and 1999) of Jesper Ranum (one of 2 leadsingers and writer of most of the songs) are a lot better than the 2 DeFilm albums. I only have one of those solo albums and itīs really good, but Iīve listened to a couple of songs from the second one (called "Second") and theyīre equally great.

To find out more about DeFilm and Jesper Ranum visit http://www.ranum.net/defilm/index.htm
Some of this page is only in Danish though.

I have been e-mailing a bit with Jesper Ranum these past few days. Heīs very busy making jingles, TV spots and commercials, but he says that he has a couple of new songs waiting to get out. So I canīt wait for more news on that....

I have his album "Second" now and I must say that itīs really great! Itīs surely one of the bestproduced albums I have...the sound is extremely crisp/pure! Too bad that all songs arenīt as great as theyīre wellproduced...but songs like "Losing my direction", "Phonecall", "Just a dream" & "You are the night" are REALLY great!!!

I was hoping that the 2 DeFilm albums would be released on CD sometime in the future but Iīm afraid they have no plans to do that. But perhaps heīs gonna send me CDRs of the 2 albums...Iīm REALLY hoping for that!!!!

I got a new e-mail from Jesper Ranum today. He had a really great offer for me....2 boxes of DeFilm records and extra stuff (no idea what that is) which I can get if I pay for the boxes (DKK 125,- each) and postage. Naturally I transferred money to his account right away and now Iīm waiting for some very exciting stuff to arrive at my doorstep!!

Furthermore he told me that he & DeFilm are planning to release a DVD with their videos and lots of extra material....news about this will be found on www.ranum.net/defilm/index.htm later...

I've just been introduced to DeFilm by Poul e for the first time. What can I say? 'Whalesong' is wonderful! I'm in love with this superb song. It's so melancholy and beautiful and yes, there are Alphaville and Marian Gold similarities. It's exactly what I like to listen to and I really wish I'd heard it long before now.

I'm on my tenth listen tonight...

Iīm really happy that you like Whale song!! Now try this one:

I see light

Thereīs a time in every life
Thereīs a time when it all begins
And the shine in your eyes tonight
Reflecting all the power that Iīm feeling inside
I see light, our love is a fantasy

Thereīs a word in every youth
Thereīs a word of unspoken truth
We need every single man on the wings again
We need every single man on the wings again
I see light, our love is a fantasy

I see light, shining on you and me
Our love is a fantasy
Weīll make it for just one night
Itīs burning just like a disease
So come on baby tell me please, our love is a fantasy

Thereīs a time in every life
Thereīs a time for the end to come
And the shine in your eyes tonight
Reflecting all the anger that Iīm feeling inside
I see light, our love is a fantasy

I see light, shining on you and me
Our love is a fantasy
Weīll make it for just one night
Itīs burning just like a disease
So come on baby tell me please, our love is a fantasy

Fantasy, our love is, fantasy
Fantasy, fantasy, our love is
Fantasy, fantasy

I see light, shining on you and me
Our love is a fantasy
Weīll make it for just one night
Itīs burning just like a disease
So come on baby tell me please, that sometimes itīs hard

I see light, shining on you and me
Our love is a fantasy
Weīll make it for just one night
Itīs burning just like a disease
So come on baby tell me please, our love is a fantasy

Jesper Ranum 1987

"I see light" is also from DeFilmīs 2nd (and last[cry]) album. Jesper Ranum wasnīt a full member of DeFilm anymore on this album, but he wrote 3 songs and the 2 (WS & ISL) of them are the best songs on the album....

Kaz
28 Apr 2003, 11:05
Just downloaded that one and listening to it now. Impressions to follow...

Kaz
28 Apr 2003, 11:13
OK, first impressions...

When I read the words, it looked promising. However, it only merited one hearing from me - I wasn't struck on it at all, not like I was instantly struck on 'Whalesong'. It doesn't have the 'tug-at-your-heartstrings- factor that 'Whalesong' has in my opinion.

It might grow on me after a few more hearings - you never know...

poul e
28 Apr 2003, 12:09
I agree Kaz. And like I said unlike Whale song it takes some time to grow on you....but I really like it now...after listening to it about 200 times ;) But try it 5-10 times and if you still donīt like you might never do....

But itīs no secret that Whale song is THE special DeFilm song! Itīs also better than any Ranum solosong, but IMO itīs because Whale song is unique!!

Btw...I got a little package from Jesper Ranum the other day containing remastered versions of the 2 DeFilm albums + 2 remixes. The boxes he was talking about donīt exist....itīs just because he canīt take money for the CDs because of legal rights....

poul e
28 Apr 2003, 12:37
OK...as Iīm pretty certain that "Whale song" never will be released again and itīs VERY difficult to find Iīve decided to send an mp3 of it to those that are interested. Itīs just too good a song to keep secret!!!

PM or e-mail me and Iīll send it to you thru MSN or e-mail. But please keep this mp3 sharing talk to pms, chats and e-mails as itīs illegal to make mp3s and share them with others.

Kaz
28 Apr 2003, 14:36

I have the 2 DeFilm LPs, I saw your dream 12", Whale song 7", the 2 Ranum CDs and Phonecall and Photograph Promo CD singles. So even if I´ve been looking for the Bitter surprise singles for many years now I still haven´t been able to find them. But I hope I will some day....

I have been telling Poul E. about my listening to these songs by mail, but I would like to share this here.

Needless to say 'Whalesong' is my favourite. I've liked more the sound in DéFilm's songs than Ranum's ones, maybe because I liked very much Tommy Corfixen's voice --a lot more than Jesper Ranum's--, and because it reminds me of the sound of early Alan Parsons Project, which I love.

About Ranum's work, I like more "Slowdown", although the song I liked the more of those that Poul was so kind to send me is 'You are the night', which belongs to "Second".
Very sweet music.

I have been under a lot of pressure these days and these songs have been soothing me for a while. They gave me back a sense of melody from a new source. I really can't say I did not like one of them.

Thanks a lot, Poul.

I have introduced you to several songs by DeFilm and Jesper Ranum but it seems like I have more or less "forgotten" the song that started it all. "I saw your dream" was the first single released back in 1985 and it was a hit in Denmark and some Asian countries as far as I remember. The single version is great but the extended version is an absolute killersong and one of my favourite extended versions by any artist.

I saw your dream

I find your view on life is beautiful
It’s not naive It’s just an unspoiled feeling
if all the others caught the childish nerve
then Shangri-La would be for good around us.

Don’t you know that I’m so stuck in life
I keep on searching for the new direction
consciense whisper in my ear
but I can’t use it, so I make it disappear.

I saw your dreams
I saw the love that you gave away
(I saw your dreams)
I saw your dreams, and what a beautiful dream
How could you loose it, how could you loose
I saw your dreams, I saw the love that you gave away
(I saw your dreams)

Don’t you know that I’m so stuck in life
I keep on searching for the new direction
if all the others caught the childish nerve
the Shangri-La would be for good around us.

I saw your dreams
I saw the love that you gave away
(I saw your dreams)
I saw your dreams, and what a beautiful dream
How could you loose it, how could you loose
I saw your dreams, I saw the love that you gave away
(I saw your dreams)

I saw your face
It was the face I love
(I saw your face)
I saw your dream
It was the dream I love
It was the dream I love
I saw your dream
I saw your dream, I saw your way
It was the dream I love
I saw your dream, I saw your way
I saw your dream
(I saw your dream, I saw your way)
How could you lose it, how could you lose it
(I saw your dream, I saw your way)
I saw your dream
(I saw your dream, I saw your way)
How could you lose it, how could you lose it.

A couple of you seem to be interested in the long version so here it is. I think this song is very typical for the mid 80s. The long version can be likened to long versions of songs like "Sun always shines on TV", "Sounds like a melody" and "Square rooms". So if you like those songs you really should give this one a chance !!!

@Malila: Yes...allthough that is my best guess it could also be an updated website which I know they have been working on earlier. But unless it's with a lot of downloads it's not that exciting....and Jesper sounded excited [wink]

Thanks for the information Poul, it sounds great that they maybe will put the albums on cd. Will keep an eye on this topic!

Jesper Ranum's new website is now up and running. You can listen to both DeFilm albums, both Ranum solo albums and a lot of other stuff at http://www.pickupsongs.com/#/albums.html/

Cool site......the DeFilm album 'Coming To Your Heart Soon' is IMO one
of the best albums made ever...it's on my top 10, and it's from 1986 [smoke]

The sound recording is fantastic and very crispy too....awesome!
